March 13, 2023
I am thrilled to let families know we will be further expanding our mental-health support systems during the 2023-24 school year. In February, the members of the Board of Education supported adding two additional psychologists for the next school year.

This means that all four of our elementary schools will each have a dedicated psychologist as well as a social worker. (Two schools previously shared a psychologist.) This is in addition to the four-person mental health team in place at Glen Crest Middle School.

These two new positions speak to the Board’s commitment to supporting the whole child. It is also an acknowledgment that students face different pressures than they did even 10 years ago. Social media continues to put new stress on children and affect their self-esteem.

As a district, our educational team believes children need to be physically and mentally healthy to grow academically. We strive to intervene early and provide the proper emotional supports so that kids can grow up to be healthy, successful adults.

Thank you to the community for supporting this important work.
"SnapCodes" used for April 5 registration will begin arriving in mail
Families should soon receive a letter with an individualized “SnapCode” that will be used to register for the 2023-24 school year. Letters with the SnapCodes will be sent to the family of new and returning students via U.S. mail starting the week of March 13. (Families of current eighth-grade students will receive information about registering for high school from the district they will attend.)

It is important that families hold onto this letter because the SnapCode will be needed when registration opens at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 5. Anyone who loses their SnapCode before registration will need to prove residency at the district office.

Congratulations to Park View's Jill Lang: Educator of the Year!
Park View Elementary School second-grade teacher Jill Lang is the CCSD 89 Educator of the Year. At the annual Glen Ellyn Community Awards on March 14, Lang will be honored for making Glen Ellyn a better place to live, learn, and work.

Lang has known she wanted to be a teacher since she was in elementary school. She and her twin sister would come home from school and “teach” their stuffed animals. Lang began her teaching career when she was asked to take over a class for a Park View second-grade teacher who was taking maternity leave. The teacher didn’t return and Lang hasn’t left. Since 1987, she has been teaching first or second grade at Park View.

“For me, it’s not really been a job,” Lang said. “It’s been a true love.”

Video: School nurse talks about the impact of Make-A-Wish
Briar Glen Elementary School nurse Casey Reynolds is a former pediatric oncology nurse. In that role, she accompanied two families on Make-A-Wish trips and she saw the impact the organization makes for the recipient and their families.

CCSD 89 is raising funds to support Make-A-Wish, an organization that supports children with life-threatening medical conditions. The district’s goal is to raise at least $5,000. Make-A-Wish makes a huge difference for kids like Nikita, a seventh-grader at Glen Crest who received a special trip through Make-A-Wish.

Make sure your student is rested, ready for IAR tests
Students in grades 3-8 began taking the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) on Monday. Students in grades 5 and 8 will also take the online Illinois Science Assessment. This required assessment shows how students are growing academically and helps staff adjust instruction to meet their needs.

You can ensure your child does their best by keeping a regular routine: get good rest at night and a healthy breakfast each morning; make sure their Chromebook is fully charged; and let your child know you have confidence in them. Calculators are provided to students for the test.
Community can donate blood March 15 at Glen Crest Middle School
