October 24, 2023

Dear District 89 families,

To say that I have enjoyed my first four months as superintendent would be a significant understatement. It has been a pleasure and a privilege getting to know the students and families in this community. I have been able to visit several classrooms each week and participate in some awesome activities. During every visit, I learn more about each school’s traditions and culture.

Our staff and our students have been great about sharing their perspectives on education. Now, I would like to hear more from our families and community members.

Our first “Talking 89” session will held on Thursday, December 7. The meetings are open to anyone in the community. There will be two opportunities to meet that day: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Both meetings will be on the first floor of the district office, 22W600 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn.

This time is set aside for me to listen to you and learn more about:

  • What do you value about education in CCSD 89?
  • How do you determine if we are meeting your educational expectations?
  • Where is the district meeting (or exceeding) your expectations and where are there opportunities for growth?

Reservations are not required but I would request that if you plan on attending, you RSVP on this form, so we can prepare the appropriate seating.

This is the first of three opportunities this year for us to connect in an informal setting. The topics and dates for the next two meetings will be determined after gathering feedback on December 7.

Sincerely,

Doug Eccarius

CCSD 89 Superintendent

Halloween reminders for elementary, middle school

Students are allowed to dress up at school for Halloween. Elementary students can wear costumes after lunch; middle school students can dress up all day. Costumes should be non-violent and school-appropriate. No student should bring a pretend weapon to school.

In elementary school, costumes should be brought in a bag and students can change before the parade begins. There will not be time for make-up or hairspray. Costumes should fit over a student’s clothes.

CCSD 89 hiring classroom aides, substitute teachers

If you enjoy working with kids and you’re looking for a job with good benefits, consider working in CCSD 89. The district is hiring general-education and special-education aides; substitute teachers; and other positions. Some positions offer health and dental insurance, as well as retirement benefits. Substitute teachers make $140 per day, with an increase to $155 after 15 days of substitute teaching.
