CCSMM Update - January 20, 2022

Happy New Year!

It has been more than a year since we formed the Connecticut Coalition for Sustainable Materials Management (CCSMM), a coalition of municipal officials and staff and DEEP working to identify solutions to the current waste crisis in Connecticut. Co-chairs Matt Knickerbocker, Bethel's First Selectman, Laura Francis, Durham's First Selectman and Katie Dykes the DEEP Commissioner continue to lead us from developing ideas to action. Now is the time to implement solutions and learn from each other.

New to the Coalition?

If your town has yet to join us, and this is your first introduction, please know any towns that are not part of CCSMM can join at any time. If your town has been participating and you're a new elected official, please reach out to Chris Nelso n to learn more and ensure you get future communication. You can also learn more at CCSMM and review the CCSMM Options Menu completed December 2020.

A pilot program in Meriden aims to make sustainability the way of the future. It is the first of its kind in Connecticut and it gives people who live in the city the chance to compost food waste for free. View the great video on NBC Connecticut about the program here. We recognize that each municipality can contribute in different ways, through different measures, to achieve our shared goals.

FULL COALITION MEETING

The full Coalition hasn't met since October 2021 and so much has happened! Join us to hear updates from DEEP regarding new programs including ReduceWasteCT and Packaging EPR, status of Sustainable Materials Management Grant, and the different initiatives as a result of the recent Bottle Bill legislation. It's also time to hear news and updates from Coalition members to share recent initiatives.

Solid Waste Advisory Committee Meeting

January 25, 2022

Please join us for the next SWAC meeting for legislative and program updates from CT DEEP.

The Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC) meetings are open to all and all meetings will be held in an open stakeholder forum. Meetings will be held on the fourth Tuesday of certain months from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. traditionally at DEEP’s Office - 79 Elm Street, Hartford, CT, but currently virtual via ZOOM until further notice. See the Advisory Committee Information and Schedule for upcoming meeting information, materials and minutes and presentations from previous meetings.

Any towns that are not part of CCSMM can join at any time by reaching out to Chris Nelson.
