Parental Involvement Key in NJM'S Share the Keys
By Violet Marrero
Consumer Safety Director
NJM Insurance Group
|
For parents of teens, it's the day of reckoning-the day their son or daughter receives his or her driver's permit. Naturally, they will worry. Fortunately, there is help available to calm their fears.
Share the Keys, offered free of charge by NJM Insurance, is an interactive orientation program available to all New Jersey and Pennsylvania high schools. The program helps prepare parents and their teens for the challenges and risks that young drivers will face on the road.
The program is research-based, data-driven and designed to reduce teen driver crash risks through increased parental involvement. A groundbreaking study conducted by Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to determine the reasons behind the high teen driver crash rate was instrumental in helping shape Share the Keys content and measuring its effectiveness. What CHOP found was that parents who set rules and monitored where their teen drivers were going and with whom in a supportive way were half as likely to be in a crash.
Since learned behaviors influence driving behaviors, the program has the biggest impact when introduced prior to or during the time when teens are learning to drive. Teens are at their greatest risk for being involved in a crash during the first 12 to 24 months of driving. As the CHOP research reinforced, parental participation is essential in the successful transition from an uninformed, inexperienced driver to a better-informed, responsible one, especially since teens mimic their parents' driving behaviors.
During the 60- to 90-minute Share the Keys presentation, parents learn about the Graduated Driver's Licensing process; how to effectively monitor their teen's driving, and how to fit in practice driving; and collaborate with their teen on a binding, written driving agreement that addresses seat-belt usage, curfew, fellow teen passenger restriction, and distracted driving. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has adopted the program's parent guide as the official parent guide for the state.
The participating parents complete pre- and post-session surveys. Follow up surveys sent 6 months to a year after the presentations show that 92% of the teen drivers had not been involved in a crash and 94% had not received a violation.

Managing Partner
Coordinated Project Solutions, LLC

After we build a relationship with a client, or a "strategic alliance partner", we go on to make new connections. It's important to touch base on a regular basis with those we have met in the past. Plan to make a quick phone call to say hello...or send an email with a flyer for an upcoming Chamber event that you plan to attend. Invite them to join you.
Just as we have all learned that it is more effective to keep existing employees than to search for new, the same principle holds true for the relationships we build through networking.
Remember...it's all about "relationships". Best place to start them is at CCSNJ.
Click on the link below to meet our Ambassadors. If you have a question after business hours, most of us can still be reached. My cell is on 24/7. Feel free to call me, Rich St.Maur, at 609-230-7800.
