Umbrella Insurance:
Protecting Your Assets

By Livia Hillmyer
Personal Lines Administrator
NJM Insurance Group

It's a situation you never envisioned: an auto collision or accident at your home results in a lawsuit and a large judgement against you. Your personal assets could be exposed if your only coverage is a standard auto and homeowners policy, which typically provide up to $500,000 in liability insurance.

Without enough liability insurance, assets such as your home, investments, retirement fund-even future earnings-are at risk. Yet, for as little as a few hundred dollars more a year, an umbrella policy could give you financial protection and peace of mind.

An umbrella policy can offer millions of dollars in supplemental liability insurance. Insurance companies such as NJM require customers to carry $500,000 of liability insurance on their auto and homeowners policies to qualify for an umbrella policy. By purchasing an umbrella policy with a $1 million liability limit, you would have $1.5 million in protection against a claim or judgement resulting from a covered accident involving your personal automobile or home.

Umbrella insurance can also include coverage for some defamation claims or certain claims that arise when you travel outside of the country. This kind of risk is not typically covered under a homeowners or auto policy.

If you have assets that could be exposed by a serious injury stemming from a collision or an accident at your home, an umbrella policy can give you added protection and peace of mind .

Sometimes, all it takes is that one extra question to make a better connection. And when you're looking to find out "who knows who" that one question starts with, "Are you familiar with...?" It could be a firm in the community or some other connection that may be possible based on the industry of the person you've met. Or maybe even a project, as in: "You're in construction? Are you familiar with that new building going up near the mall?" Sometimes there isn't familiarity, but it keeps the conversation going and could take it further in interesting directions!
