Before "I Do": Checking Off Your Home & Auto Insurance Needs

By Matt Peroni
Supervisor, Personal Lines Underwriting

The time between the engagement and the wedding can be stressful. Saying yes to the ring was easy; saying yes to the dress, not so much. Then there's the ceremony, guest list, reception, honeymoon, where to live - and that's just the beginning of the to-do list.

If you are recently engaged, congratulations and best wishes! As you develop your list, don't forget your home and auto insurance needs. While love and marriage go hand-in-hand, insurance and marriage are an important component to long-term peace of mind.

Once the diamond ring is slipped on the bride-to-be's finger, it should be covered in case of loss, theft, or damage. You can insure that ring with an endorsement on your homeowners or renters policy. If you're the bride and still living at home, ask for a "rider" on your parents' policy. You may need to supply a ring appraisal to your insurance company when asking for a quote.

Whether you're buying a home or condo, or renting an apartment, you'll need protection for your personal possessions. While homeowners policies provide it, many renters mistakenly think their landlord's insurance will compensate them for any personal property losses. However, a landlord's policy only covers structural damage, not the contents within your apartment. So that nice furniture, the flat screen TV, all the wedding gifts? None of it is covered in the event of a fire unless you have a renters insurance policy.

If you and your beloved have auto policies with separate insurance carriers, you could save money by having your cars covered under one policy since most companies offer multi-car discounts, especially if you both have clean driving records. And while you're co-joining, bundling your auto and home/renters insurance with one insurer can offer additional savings on your premium.

Finally, depending on your assets, you might consider getting umbrella insurance. It provides additional liability protection beyond what you have on your auto or home/renters policies in the event you are sued as the result of a car crash, or if someone is injured on your property.

The time between engagement and wedding goes by in the blink of any eye. Before you say "I do," make sure to include your insurance needs on that to-do list.

United Airlines Donates $5,000 to the Food Bank
of  South Jersey's Summer Meals Program

United Airlines recently supported the Food Bank of South Jersey's Summer Meals program by making a $5,000 donation to benefit five Summer Meal locations throughout Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem counties.

As part of its sponsorship, Blenda Riddick, director of corporate & government affairs for United Airlines, was on-hand at Sanitarium Playground of New Jersey to help serve children a fresh and nutritious lunch featuring chicken nuggets, celery, plums and milk. Located in Gloucester County, the site typically feeds 400 food insecure families a day.

"As a company, United Airlines believes in the importance of proper nutrition and that no child should go hungry," said Riddick. "We are pleased to have offered our support to the Summer Meals initiative which helped feed over 140,000 children and applaud the extensive efforts the Food Bank of South Jersey has done within their local communities this summer."

A lot of people that are new to the chamber have a hard time getting started.  Many people dislike networking events because we don't know what to say to the group. Walking through a room is a fast track to event anxiety. I need to attend, so what should I do? Its simple - volunteer to help out. You have a purpose and something to talk about. What is even better, you position yourself as someone helpful - proving how indispensable you are rather than telling everyone about it.
