Message from the Executive Director
What a month!
Even as the summer season gets underway CCTC has not slowed a bit.
We declared June “IT Month” and produced two excellent presentations; Beth Bowman from We Can Cape Cod discussed the organization’s IT evolution on First Friday and Joel Morgan from IT Works! Reviewed how we can keep our data and systems safe at our Coffee Q&A.
CCTC volunteers manned a table at Recharge America’s Cape Cod EV Test Drive event braving rain and wind to help promote and support alternative fuels. Thanks to Jane Ward for coordinating and the volunteers for the hard work. Fortunately, Doug the Quahog also visited later in the month predicting warmer, sunny days ahead!
The news media exploded with stories about AI. Is it safe? Will it take over our jobs? Should it be regulated and by whom? Many more questions than answers. The CCTC is planning a comprehensive look at AI and its implications in depth during the fall either in an extended First Friday or across multiple sessions. There are many aspects and implications to this technology, much more than can be presented properly in a single session so we’ve formed an ad hoc committee to examine the best structure and what topics should be included. Stay tuned for details.
Perhaps second only to AI in tech news is broadband. I write this just as the FCC has released BEAD program grant allocations; Massachusetts receiving $147 million to help achieve digital equity across the Commonwealth.
Steve Johnston, CEO of OpenCape is our July First Friday speaker (held on the 2nd Friday this month, July 14) and will address the funding as well as what they are doing to improve internet service on the Cape. Steve is a knowledgeable and entertaining speaker and shouldn’t be missed.
CCTC was represented at many public events during the month as well including MBI’s Broadband & Digital Equity Summit in Worcester, the Digital Equity Working Group and the Cape and Islands Regional Economic Development Planning Session in Chatham making sure the interests of our community were promoted.
On a lighter note, the Cape Cod Baseball League opened its 100th season undiminished despite a couple of years of lockdown. The players are better than ever, and the crowds are back. Join the CCTC in a private box on July 30 at McKeon Park as the Harbor Hawks host the Orleans Firebirds. The price of admission includes “ballpark fare” dinner, the usual excellent company and the best amateur baseball in the country.
Hope to see you at an event soon!
Steve
