European Commission Launches Public Consultation to Evaluate EU Food Contact Materials Legislation
The European Commission (EC) has launched a public consultation in order to evaluate the current EU legislation for food contact materials (FCMs), specifically of Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004.
The evaluation "aims to assess to what extent the current EU legislative framework for food contact materials is fit for purpose and delivers as expected and to identify any unexpected impacts or issues as a consequence of the current legislation," the EC said. It added: "The regulation sets basic requirements that FCMs must not release their constituents into food at levels harmful to human health and contains rules on labelling and traceability as well as powers to adopt more specific measures for certain types of materials."
The evaluation will seek the view of stakeholders, public authorities, the general public, all businesses at any stage of the FCM supply chain and their European or national representatives, NGOs and consumer organizations, as to whether the current EU legislation for FCMs fulfills its purpose. A questionnaire is available online until May 6.
The feedback received from the consultation will be taken into account in the evaluation. Based on the evaluation, the EC will consider which, if any, possible steps need to be taken in the future concerning the regulation of FCMs in the EU.
Once the evaluation of the FCM legislation is completed, which is expected in early 2020, a synopsis report of all consultation activities will be published.
