INDUSTRY NEWS

2025 containerboard outlook: Price increases, index exits and tariff threats

Certain trends in the containerboard space, like price increases, are expected to carry their influence into 2025. But other topics, like new tariff threats, also are entering the mix as contenders for top attention in the new year, analysts say.

RaboResearch recently released its quarterly North America containerboard report for Q4 2024, which projects an 11.4% annual price increase through September 2026. This “closely aligns” with the average $60-80 per metric ton price increase announcements for various grades of containerboard in 2025. READ MORE.

International Paper, Georgia-Pacific try for 2025 fiber price increases

These moves by North America’s first and fourth largest containerboard producers, respectively, could be the sign of a potential trend heading into 2025. It follows an active year of numerous price increases throughout 2024.

Packaging Corporation of America was the first to move last week with its own price increases planned for Jan. 1 — $70 per ton for linerboard and $90 per ton for medium. That news surprised some in the sector, who generally expected to see companies make smaller and later increases due to the current supply situation.
