ECONOMIC NEWS

Global Manufacturing Update CCTI is a member of the National Association of Manufacturing Council of Associations, and this update is courtesy of NAM. (1/21/24)

  • The World Bank estimates that global real GDP would rise 2.6% and 2.4% in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Its forecast for 2023 growth declined from the prediction in June 2023 of 3.1% growth. Tight monetary policy conditions and geopolitical risks would weigh on worldwide growth prospects, it argued. For the U.S., the World Bank saw 2.5% and 1.6% growth in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

  • The global economy remained challenging, even as signs of possible stabilization emerged in recent months. If economic progress in previous months has been an example of taking two steps forward, then the January data would also represent taking one step back. Indeed, seven of the top 10 markets for manufactured goods exports had lower PMI readings in January than in December.

  • The J.P. Morgan Global Manufacturing PMI™ edged down from 49.3 in November to 49.0 in December, contracting for the 16th straight month. New orders, output, exports and hiring each declined at a somewhat faster rate in December. With that said, the outlook for future output strengthened, with respondents slightly more upbeat about production growth over the next six months.

  • Two of the top 10 markets for U.S.-manufactured goods (China and Mexico) experienced expanding growth in December, the same pace as in November. Manufacturing activity in Canada contracted in December for the eighth straight month, falling to a post-pandemic low, with underlying data mostly lower. Yet, Canadian survey respondents expressed more upbeat expectations about production growth over the next six months.

  • Chinese real GDP grew 5.2% year-over-year in the fourth quarter, up from 4.9% in the third quarter. In December, industrial production rose 6.8% year-over-year, edging up from 6.6% in November and the best pace since February 2022. Despite improved data, the Chinese economy remained challenged on many fronts, especially relative to pre-pandemic levels.

  • Eurozone industrial production decreased 0.3% in November, falling for the fourth time in the past five months. Over the past 12 months, Eurozone industrial production plummeted 6.8%. With that said, the unemployment rate edged down to a five-month low, and inflationary pressures continued to moderate.

  • Meanwhile, the U.S. trade deficit declined from $64.48 billion in October to $63.21 billion in November, with total trade volumes lower. With that said, the service-sector trade surplus rose to a record $26.19 billion.
