In the Spotlight: Pilot Awardees

“User-centered approach to developing an interface for a pointofcare blood metal analysis system”

Summary:
There is a growing public health need for rapid, accurate, low-cost monitoring of heavy metals manganese and lead in blood of children in underserved populations like those in Southside Chicago, who are especially vulnerable to environmental exposure. This project focuses on engineering an effective and user-friendly point-of-care (POC) system for measuring metals in the blood and drinking water. The system is intended to be used by phlebotomists in clinical settings in addition to lay home users. Given the unique needs of the different users, the project will develop multiple tailored design solutions, including the user interface, workflow, and community education/messaging around heavy metal monitoring. This effort is a collaboration between experts in human factors, engineering, public health, and design.

Training Grant Open to Patient Centered Outcomes Researchers

A Chicago Center for Excellence in Learning Health Systems Research Training (ACCELERAT) is now accepting applications for the K12 training opportunity for faculty at Northwestern and other Chicago-based medical schools. K12 is a training grant designed to support the early research career development of junior faculty who will be engaged in advancing patient centered outcomes research within learning health systems.

The UIC Great Lakes Center for Occupational Health and Safety   is soliciting proposals for the next round of Pilot Project Research Training funds. The funds are intended for new occupational safety & health investigators in Fiscal Year (FY) 2020-2021. The purpose of the awards is to provide research training that will prepare new researchers for more comprehensive investigations by supporting new, short-term (1-year) projects.   
 
Funding Amount: Three to five awards at $6,000- $20,000 per project
