Krekorian Launches Neighborhood Beautification Grant Program

LOS ANGELES - Councilmember Paul Krekorian today announced the launch of the Neighborhood Council Beautification Program - an $80,000 matching grant program for neighborhood councils within the second district.

"This is a terrific opportunity to upgrade our neighborhoods and strengthen communities," Councilmember Paul Krekorian said. "With these funds, we will work closely with neighborhood councils in my district to kick off beautification and improvement projects throughout Council District 2.

"These grants will be used by each community for projects that will create an enhanced quality of life for our Valley."

Made possible by the council office's discretionary funds, the grant program aims to provide neighborhood councils in Council District 2 - comprised of Greater Valley Glen, Mid-Town North Hollywood, North Hollywood North East, North Hollywood West, Studio City, Sun Valley, Valley Village and Van Nuys - resources for community-driven, infrastructure projects that enhance, strengthen and beautify the neighborhood. Grants would help to support landscaping projects, tree plantings, benches, planters, curb cuts and more.The program's creation and launch are part of a larger push to increase beautification and revitalization efforts across the second district, led by the office of Councilmember Krekorian.

All projects will be initiated, planned and implemented by community members in partnership with the council office and all neighborhood councils are invited to apply for up to $10,000 each.

Clean Teams Hit the Streets for MLK's Day of Service
Volunteers get ready to plant trees at the Whitsett Slope | Photos/CD2

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - More than 200 volunteers gathered at Fire Station 89 in North Hollywood on Monday morning before dispersing into the community for a day of tree planting, street cleaning and giving back to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

Clean teams who spread out to six different areas in North Hollywood were tasked with weed abatement, clearing trash, picking up debris, landscaping and beautification. The community cleanup effort also heralded the successful completion of the second phase of the Whitsett Slope beautification project.

The slope, near the intersection of Whitsett Avenue and Saticoy Street, had been an ongoing, weed filled, dirty mess of an area for more than five years before its path to beautification started last April when hundreds of volunteers cleaned and mulched the slope to complete Phase One of the project. With help from 40 student volunteers from North Hollywood High School and dozens of community members, nearly 15 trees were planted along the slope in addition to installing an irrigation system to complete Phase Two.

The event Monday was organized by the neighborhood councils of North Hollywood North East, North Hollywood West and the Strathern Neighborhood Watch Group in partnership with the office of Councilmember Krekorian.

"Each of you today who picked up a broom, or picked up a shovel, you made a statement that you want a better future for this city," Councilmember Krekorian told the volunteers. "Through an extraordinary partnership between the city and the neighborhood, we worked together to help realize our collective vision of revitalizing this area as we continue to improve quality of life in the San Fernando Valley."

LOS ANGELES - The City Council, on Wednesday approved the formation of a committee that will focus on keeping and expanding the film and television economic sectors throughout Los Angeles.

Chaired by Councilmember Paul Krekorian, the Ad Hoc
Committee on Film and T.V. Production Jobs will
 work toward solutions to keep production rolling in Los Angeles. The committee will also continuing to press the state Legislature to renew and grow its economic incentive package Krekorian wrote and passed when he was in the California State Assembly.

The film industry has "defined this city, has been so much a part of its heritage, and an important part of our economic future, as well," Councilmember Krekorian said.

"If we don't continue to fight for incentives, we will continue to lose jobs that have defined California for decades," he continued. "If Sacramento doesn't act, there is very little we'll be able to do as a city that would offset the damage."

The first meeting is expected to be held in February.

Living History
A Modern Look Back at Our San Fernando Valley

Top photo from USC Digital Archive

This week, we continue our journey through the Valley's past and present with a photo that came to us from Bob Peppermuller, who sent us an 85-year-old (and current) glimpse of busiest intersections in North Hollywood.

According to the USC Digital Archive and the California Historical Society caption, the 1928 photo shows the view of Third Street being paved near Lankershim Boulevard, looking west on Camarillo Street towards Tujunga Avenue, Pacific Electric Vineland Avenue and the railroad crossing.

Today Vineland/Lankershim/Camarillo is multi-pronged intersection in North Hollywood. We see a few similarities (power lines and trees) in each picture and a lot of differences! What do you see?

405 North to Close for 80 Hours Next Month.
Here's What You Need to Know

LOS ANGELES - A nearly six-mile stretch of the 405 north freeway will be closed for 80 hours in mid-February. Valentine's Day weekend leading up to the President's Day holiday - from Friday, Feb. 14 to Monday, Feb. 17.

The 5.6 mile closure, between Getty Center Drive and Ventura Boulevard, includes three out of five northbound lanes during the day and a full nighttime closure of the 405's northbound lanes from Feb. 14 to Feb. 17.

The nighttime closure schedule is as follows:

- Friday night, 2/14 (early Sat morning) - 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.

- Saturday night, 2/15 (early Sun morning) - 2 a.m. to 7 a.m.

- Sunday night, 2/16 (early Mon morning) - midnight to 5 a.m.

- Monday night, 2/17 (early Tue morning) - midnight to 5 a.m.

The southbound side of the 405 will remain open during daytime hours but will be reduced to three lanes during the nighttime closure.

Sepulveda Boulevard will serve as an alternate route for local residents and emergency vehicles during the closure but it does not have the capacity to receive all the traffic diverted from the northbound lane closures. Traffic control officers will also be deployed along key ramps to guide motorists through the construction zone.

According to transportation officials, the 80-hour project eliminates the need for a prolonged series of closures that would have shut down the freeway for 55 hours during six separate periods. During the closure, workers will excavate sections of future carpool lanes which are key for finishing the 405 Sepulveda Pass Project by its scheduled mid-2014 completion date.

Motorists who travel during the Feb. 14-18 weekend are advised to prepare their routes in advance, monitor real-time traffic conditions prior to beginning their trips, follow alternative routes and avoid the area where possible.

To stay up to date with closure information follow @I_405 on Twitter and Facebook, or visit the Metro website, www.metro.net/projects/I-405/intermittent-80-hr-closure.

Railroad Safety Tips from the LAPD
LAPD recently help a news conference to bring greater awareness about safety near railroad crossings | Photo via LAPD Valley Traffic Division

LOS ANGELES - The LAPD is stepping up traffic enforcement initiatives for motorists and pedestrians to increase awareness about traffic laws near or at railroad crossings.

According to the LAPD, a train collides with a vehicle or pedestrian approximately every three hours in the United States. Last year, there were eight deaths involving train collisions in Los Angeles.

In Council District 2, there are five railroad crossings - located at Clybourn Avenue, Vineland Avenue, Tujunga Avenue, Bellaire Avenue, and Coldwater Canyon Avenue in North Hollywood. To avoid any hazards, always obey traffic laws and traffic warning signals and remember these tips:

  • Do not walk on or near rails or climb on railroad cars;
  • Do not walk on railroad bridges;
  • Do not get trapped on a railroad crossing. Never drive onto a railroad crossing until you are sure you can clear the tracks; -If your vehicle stalls on a crossing, get everyone out of the vehicle and off the tracks immediately;
  • When crossing the railroad tracks on foot, always cross the railroad crossing and obey all signs and signals.

For more information and safety tips from the LAPD, visit the CD2 News Tumblr.
