CDEL’s client, Michael, lives in transitional housing for men with disabilities. For the last five years he has been prevented from finding a long-term housing arrangement due to a 2012 eviction case that one of his prior landlords filed. Michael was never served and, rather than pursue the eviction case, the landlord locked Michael out of his apartment. Despite the fact that the landlord abandoned the court case and never obtained a judgment, the case still impeded Michael’s search for housing. CDEL stepped in on Michael’s behalf and filed motions to seal the 2012 eviction case and have it dismissed. Happily, the judge dismissed the case with prejudice and sealed the file, thereby giving Michael a fresh start to look for safe and affordable housing.
