The Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) is proud to support the careers of faculty and clinical fellows underrepresented in medicine (UiM) through our faculty development awards program. This program includes the Physician/Scientist Development Award (PSDA) and the Clinician-Teacher Development Award (CTDA). Since 2004, CDI has awarded 95 grants, totaling nearly $14 million in funding, with sponsorship from the President's Office, the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR), and CDI. | |

Opportunities for MGH Faculty to Teach HMS Students | |
If you are interested in growing your career in medical education, consider being a faculty leader for HMS students’ pre-clerkship and clerkship years, building students’ skills in interviewing and communication, physical diagnosis and reasoning, and reflection on professional development in medicine. Teaching hours count towards requirements for HMS reappointment, and faculty receive (modest) stipends for these roles!

In this month’s Humans of CDI, we spotlight the inspiring journey of Dr. Erica Warner, Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and Assistant Investigator at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Warner is a trailblazing cancer epidemiologist whose research focuses on the intersection of lifestyle, behavior, and genetic factors in cancer outcomes, with a particular emphasis on addressing health disparities.
In this month's interview learn how the CDI Physician/Scientist Development Award accelerated her research, how she mentors future PhD scientists, and why she's passionate about fostering opportunities for underrepresented faculty in medicine.

Request for Panelists for HMS SNMA Regional Medical Education Conference | |
The Harvard Medical School (HMS) Chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) will be hosting this year’s Regional Medical Education Conference (RMEC) on October 5th at HMS. The event will bring together underrepresented medical and pre-medical students from across New England to learn from Boston's physicians.
CDI and the RFC are partnering with HMS SNMA and we are seeking trainees interested in sharing their expertise by leading panels and workshops. If you're interested in participating, please sign up using this form.

Empowering Voices: Strategies for Involving Individuals with Disabilities in Research
The presentation of 4 subject matter experts (Zary Amirhosseini, Jeanhee Chung, Willyanne DeCormier Plosky, and Martha Jones will speak on the current state of disability representation in research, the importance and potential impact of improving disability representation, explanation of the legal and ethical framework for inclusion (ADA, Section 504/Rehabilitation Act) and actionable steps for enhancing the inclusion of persons with disabilities in research.

Secondary Mentorship Program for Diverse Research Faculty
| |
The Disparities Solutions Center is hosting the Secondary Mentorship Program for Diverse Research Faculty for a second year. This program aims to support four junior research faculty at MGH from historically under-represented groups through a dedicated secondary mentor in research. In addition to helping the tenure-track faculty member adjust to the environment of Mass General, the secondary mentor is available to provide another perspective on questions related to scholarly expectations and progress, work/life balance, and personal issues. The program is designed with quarterly cohort meetings and quarterly mentor meetings between mentor and mentee. Akwi W. Asombang, MD, MPH, Interventional Endoscopy, Division of Gastroenterology, received the 2024 Global Mentorship Award from the Medical Women's International Association: Near East and Africa Region and the Medical Women's Association of Zambia. Asombang was recognized for her work in mentoring African medical students and early career doctors through the Pan-African Organization for Health, Education and Research, which she co-founded and for which she serves as board president.

Wendy Macias Konstantopoulos, MD, MPH, MBA, Associate Professor in Emergency Medicine, received the AWAEM Social Medicine Advocacy Award, citing her significant contributions toward social justice and advocacy on behalf of patients and community within emergency medicine.

Giovanni (Vanni) Rodriguez, MD, received the SAEM Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine (ADIEM) Outstanding Future Academician Award to honor her commitment to the principles of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion through her work in education, research and service.
