2021 Call for Applications for PSDA and CTDA
Deadline, Tuesday, March 9
|
To help retain and develop faculty underrepresented in medicine as investigators, clinicians, teachers, and administrative leaders, the Office of the President, MGPO, Executive Committee on Research, and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) offer and sponsor two awards for the 2021 CDI Faculty Development Award Program. The deadline is 3/9, 5 pm. Learn more by viewing this recent recording of the panel session with past recipients.

The Physician/Scientist Development Award provides transitional grant funding that aids fellow or junior faculty in becoming an independent investigator at MGH. Up to $180,000 plus 15% indirect costs will be awarded to be spent over a 3- or 4-year period. To learn more and submit an application, click here.

The Clinician-Teacher Development Award provides funding support for a clinical, educational or community project to a junior and mid-career faculty member, fellow, or graduating resident pursuing an academic career as a clinician, teacher, administrative, or community leader at MGH. Up to $120,000 plus 15% indirect costs will be awarded to be spent over a 4-year period. To view details and download the application, click here.

New Resident and Clinical Fellow Loan Program Launches |
|
CDI has been critical in helping expand resident benefits to address the high cost of living in Boston and provide supplemental income for clinical trainees as you get established in your new career. In a new collaboration with Mass General Brigham GME, the Harvard University Employees Credit Union (HUECU) and BWH CDI, we have established a novel low interest Resident and Fellow loan program.
The HUECU's Education Lending coordinators can help GME residents and clinical fellows determine if this loan is right for you. The Credit Union offers a robust suite of financial education resources. Individual financial counseling on budgeting, credit and debt management is available to all members. Learn More.
The RFC will be holding a financial educational session with the HUECU in March. You will receive additional information about this session under separate cover.

As we know, the disability community includes people of all ages, genders, ethnicities, racial and economic backgrounds. There is a strong effort underway to recognize this intersectionality in the disability community - not only to ensure inclusion, but to ensure Civil Rights to those in every protected class.
The ADA came on the heels of the Civil Rights Movement, and it provided a model for disability advocates to follow. Although we have a lot more work to do on equity for people of color and for people with disabilities, these laws have given advocates a path forward.
Black History Month, celebrated during February honors the accomplishments of people of color. The short list below includes names of some strong African American disability advocates who you might recognize, but you may not know had a disability.

This event will be facilitated by Daniel Dawes, JD, Executive Director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine, co-founder of the Health Equity Leadership and Exchange Network (HELEN) and professor of health law and policy. This event is open to all.

Njambi Wanjiru Mathenge, MD, was awarded the HBNU Fogarty Global Health Fellowship for academic year 2021-2022. With the mentorship of Drs. Mark Siedner, Mazen Albaghdadi, Brian Ghoshhajra, Sam Okello, and team, this award program will support her research investigating cardiac dysfunction in Uganda while partnering in capacity building initiatives for heart failure systems of care.

Six MGHers have been named to Cell Mentor’s list of 1,000 Inspiring Black Scientists in America. They are: David Alagpulinsa, PhD, research fellow in the Infectious Disease Unit; Emery N. Brown, MD, PhD, director of the Neuroscience Statistic Research Laboratory in the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine; Sherri-Ann Burnett-Bowie, MD, MPH, associate director of the MGH Center for Diversity and Inclusion; Jonathan Jackson, PhD, founder and executive director of the Community Access, Recruitment & Engagement (CARE); Victoria Parker, PhD, research fellow in Radiology; and Camille Powe, MD, endocrinologist and co-director of the MGH Diabetes in Pregnancy Program. This list was created to compel and imbue the next generation of Black scientists and other minoritized individuals to enhance and empower our culture’s dignity.
