Policy on Patient/Family/Visitor Code of Conduct
Deadline Sunday, March 21 @ 5 pm
As you know, Elena Olson and Brian French have been working diligently with several of you and others to create a new medical policy - "Patient/Family/Visitor Code of Conduct: Responding to disrespectful, discriminatory, disruptive or harassing behaviors." This policy is now available for open comment from all MGH employees. Please see details below.  The deadline to submit is Sun, Mar 21 at 5pm.

In an effort to increase transparency and give staff a voice, the Medical Policy Committee (MPC) has an open comments period on new medical policies before they are formally approved. Learn more about the MPC here.
On 3/10 the Medical Policy Committee (MPC) reviewed the “Patient/Family/Visitor Code of Conduct: Responding to Disrespectful, Discriminatory, Disruptive, or Harassing Behaviors” and the accompanying strategy and scripting guideline.  The documents received preliminary approval.  This policy and script guideline sets expectations for patients and family/visitors to behave in a respectful manner to all members of the MGH community, and provides framework for responding to those who engage in disrespectful, discriminatory, disruptive, or harassing behavior(s) and or language directed at any member of the MGH community.  To review the policy and script, click here.

To comment on this policy, email [email protected] by 5 pm on 3/21. The MPC will consider your comments before final approval of the policy.
Get Involved: Two Opportunities
for COVID-19 Community Outreach
Community Messenger Campaign: As Mass General Brigham Community Messengers, we aim to build greater trust with the communities we serve. Outreach efforts include virtual events, in-person events, videos and mobile. If you’re interested in participating, complete this form. You can also sign up  to staff the Mass General Brigham Community Care Van. 
Volunteer to Staff Community-Based COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics: Mass General Brigham is partnering with community-based organizations to help vaccinate residents in communities hardest hit by COVID-19. These volunteer opportunities will be short term (e.g., 1-2 days for 2-4 hours), and there are clinical and non-clinical roles in this important effort. The Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma and Harvard Medical School Department of Global and Continuing Education accredits an exciting two (2) week online certificate program in Global Mental Health: Trauma and Recovery. This course will provide you with information, knowledge, and skills to provide policy, programs, and clinical care to highly traumatized patients and communities. Advances in medicine, psychology, and the neurosciences will be offered. The course will focus on significant trauma, including the impact of COVID-19 on health care providers, their families, and their communities. The course will delve deeply into the issue of Structural Racism and its impact on healthcare practitioners. By participating, you will gain a community of experienced colleagues to become a leader in providing world class care to traumatized patients and communities worldwide.

Search for TPCE Director at MGH

The Transition to the Principle Clinical Experience (TPCE) course at HMS is seeking Site Director at MGH. TPCE is a 5 week-long course required course in the Pathways curriculum at HMS, which runs from the end of August to the end of September, with an enrollment of approximately 135 students. The course consists of clinical, simulation, and classroom-based sessions designed to provide an educational and developmental bridge between the first-year pre-clerkship curriculum and the second- year core clinical clerkships (the PCE). 
 
The Site Director works closely with the Course Director at HMS, site directors from the other HMS-affiliated hospitals (BWH, BIDMC, CHA), as well as Simulation directors to plan, develop and implement the course each year. Administrative support for the Site Director is provided by MGH PCE leadership. The Site Director is responsible for approximately 40 students who are enrolled at MGH. Duties include 1) recruitment of faculty to precept bedside physical diagnosis sessions and facilitate clinical case-base discussions; 2) faculty development; 3) student assessment; 3) providing student feedback on skills and professional development; and 4) overall supervision of on-site teaching. Course leadership meets frequently during May-August for course planning, and weekly during August and September.
 
Successful candidates will have a strong interest in undergraduate medical education, well-developed organizational skills, exemplary leadership and the ability to adapt the educational environment of the current pandemic. Interested faculty must be clinically active at MGH and have an academic appointment at HMS. GLMA HPiT Co-Chair Application Open

GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality is seeking a motivated health professional student/trainee who has a passion for healthcare equality to join the GLMA Board of Directors as a Health Professional in Training (HPiT) Committee Co-Chair. The one-year term begins in the fall with the opportunity for a one-year renewal. 

The HPiT co-chair is the voice for the student and trainee members of GLMA. In addition to being a full voting board member, the position is responsible for Co-Chairing the HPiT committee, which is tasked with addressing issues important to GLMA’s student/trainee members. Students/trainees of diverse identities and experiences, interpreted broadly to include health profession, age, geographic area, and more, are encouraged to apply. Residents and fellows are also eligible to apply.

Bigelow Guest Attending Opportunity

The Disparities Leadership Program Request for Applications Intent to Apply Deadline: June 25, 2021
The Disparities Solutions Center is now accepting applications for the 2020-2021 Disparities Leadership Program. The Disparities Leadership Program (DLP) is our year-long, hands-on executive education program focused exclusively on helping health care leaders achieve equity in quality. The program is designed to help you translate the latest understanding of disparities into realistic solutions you can adopt within your organization. Through the DLP, we aim to create leaders prepared to meet the challenges of health care transformation by improving quality for populations who experience disparities. The program has three main goals:

  • To equip health care leaders with a rich understanding of the causes of disparities, the vision to implement solutions, and the strategies to transform their organization to deliver high-value health care.

  • To help leaders create strategic plans or projects to advance their work in reducing disparities in a customized way, with practical benefits tailored to every organization.
 
  • To create a professional learning and networking environment for leaders in health care to engage in peer-to-peer learning, crowd sourcing of ideas and strategies for reducing disparities, resource sharing, collaboration, and ongoing support in the form of a national DLP alumni network.

50 Most Influential People of Color in Higher Education

Congratulations
Joshua Budhu MD, neuro-oncology fellow at MGH and DFCI, has been selected as a 2021-2022 Commonwealth Fund Fellow in Minority Health Policy at the Chan School of Public Health. He will be working on providing equitable access to care for oncology patients and diversifying clinical trials.
Altaf Saadi, MD, MSc received the 2021 Academy of Women Achievers. She is a general academic neurologist and researcher at MGH and the MGH Chelsea Health Care Center, and Instructor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. She is also a faculty affiliate with the Mongan Institute, Associate Director of the MGH Asylum Clinic, and medical expert with the Physicians for Human Rights Asylum Network. Her research focuses on neuropsychiatric health disparities and immigrant communities including asylum-seekers and refugees. Read more about the award here.
Collin Stultz, MD, PhD, of the Cardiology Division, was named a 2021-2022 Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholars by the Phi Beta Kappa Society. The scholars visit universities and colleges where Phi Beta Kappa chapters are located. Visiting Scholars spend two days on each campus meeting informally with undergraduates, participating in classroom lectures and seminars, and giving one major lecture open to the academic community and general public.
