Congratulations to the 2021 CTDA and PSDA Recipients |
|
The CDI supports the careers of faculty and graduates underrepresented in medicine (UIM) through our faculty development award program, which includes the Physician/Scientist Development Award (PSDA) and the Clinician-Teacher Development Award (CTDA). Since 2004, CDI has sponsored 61 awards, totaling close to $8 million in funding. Although these awards have been historically funded by ECOR and the MGPO, the MGH 10-Point Structural Equity Plan has allocated funding to expand CDI and this award program. As a result, in 2021, CDI is sponsoring 3 additional recipients, for a total of nine awards - 3 CTDA and 6 PSDA.

RFC Financial Education Series - Recordings Available |
|
The CDI Resident and Fellow Committee (RFC) held a series of webinars “Learning the Basics of Your Finances," with the support of the Harvard University Employees Credit Union. This four-part series started with an introductory session (April 8) of resources available to trainees in the Harvard system including individualized personal finance counselors and retirement planning amongst other services, and then proceeded with sessions on Debt Repayment (April 15), Budgeting (April 29), and Credit Management (May 13). We encourage those who were unable to attend to check out the recordings by clicking here.
Through this Financial Education Series, we hope that participants will gain the information and skills to implement a life-long plan for financial success.

A year like no other: facing what we've lost and harnessing hope
This past year saw so much loss. And yet, the losses were not shared equally. Communities of color have made up an outsized share of cases and COVID related deaths. State sanctioned violence against Black men, the explosion of anti-Asian hate and the growing divide between places in the world with access to vaccines and those without are just some of the examples of this imbalance. We know that the ways we metabolize the events of this past year are affected by our personal and cultural histories. And, that there can be healing and a way forward found in coming together.
We will have an evening of conversation and poetry where we face and acknowledge this past year and share where we look for hope and inspiration to continue the work that we do.

The Disparities Leadership Program Request for Applications
Intent to Apply Deadline: June 25, 2021

The Disparities Leadership Program (DLP) is now taking applications for the 2021-2022 class. Letters of intent are due Friday, June 25, 2021 and applications are due Friday, July 9, 2021. The DLP is a year-long executive education program designed for leaders from health care organizations who want to implement practical strategies to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in health care, particularly through quality improvement. To date, over 475 participants from 207 organizations representing 33 states, Washington D.C., the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Canada, and Switzerland have participated in the program.

The new Equity, Social Justice, and Advocacy Award recognizes individuals at Harvard Medical School (HMS)/Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) and within the HMS/HSDM-affiliate community who advance equity, social justice, and advocacy - contributions that affirm the HMS mission, HMS community values, and medical professionalism. Health equity and social justice advocacy – whether directed at our patients, practices, institutions, systems, or society – are inherent in medicine’s professional ethos. To be contd..
Eligibility
The following individuals are eligible for this award:
Faculty – must be based at HMS/HSDM, or an HMS-affiliated hospital or institution.
Trainee – must be a house officer, clinical or research fellow, post-doctoral fellow based at HMS/HSDM or at an HMS-affiliated hospital or institution.
Student – must be enrolled at HMS/HSDM or HMS Division of Medical Sciences.
Staff – must work directly for HMS or HSDM (receiving a Harvard paycheck).
Nominations
In addition to internal nominations, self-nominations and nominations from outside institutions, organizations or individuals will be accepted.
Submissions
Self-nominations are accepted. All nominations must be submitted online.

Health Equity Design Challenge Definition Workshop

This workshop aims to define and refine the core statement at the center of our upcoming Design Challenge centered on health equity. Our goal is to bring together a group with knowledge in health equity and race to help determine our 'how might we statement'. We will frame this challenge to work towards sustainable, community-led and -controlled outcomes.
What’s our focus?
At HXD, we announced a design challenge centered on increasing rates of COVID vaccination. After conversations with experts in the health ecosystem and government, we pivoted our challenge to address the causes (access and mistrust of health systems), not the symptom (low rates of COVID-19 vaccination), of health inequity for Black and Brown communities.
During this workshop we will:
- Bring people together in a Mad*Pow-facilitated workshop to identify the systemic challenges, gaps in care, and unmet needs that disproportionately impact BIPOC communities
- Examine how access and trust impact health equity, and begin homing in on problem statements (or ‘How Might We’ statements) to focus and fuel the design challenge
- Create a shared vision for the future: What does health equity look like? What does it feel like?

Elsie M. Taveras, MD, MPH has been named the Chief Community Health Equity Officer for Mass General Brigham. In this role, Dr. Taveras will work collaboratively with leaders from across the system to lead Mass General Brigham forward as a force for change in confronting inequity and racism.
Dr. Taveras currently serves as the Chief of the Division of General Academic Pediatrics and Executive Director of the Kraft Center for Community Health at Mass General Hospital. Click here to read more.
