Meet the New CDI Faculty co-Directors for Research and Student Project Coordinator |
|
The CDI strives to advance diversity, equity and inclusion across MGH under the umbrella of the Office for Equity and Community Health. Via the MGH Structural Equity Plan, the scope of CDI, which has historically served physicians and scientists recently expanded across the entire Patient Care Staff and research workforce. With that said, we are delighted to welcome three new CDI staff: Julie Price, PhD and Cesar Castro, MD, MMSc, as the CDI Faculty co-Directors for Research, and Amanda Picket as Student Project Coordinator.

Meet Amanda Picket, CDIs Student Project Coordinator |
Amanda Picket has joined us as Student Project Coordinator! Amanda holds a master's degree in Gender and Cultural Studies from Simmons University and a BA from the University of Connecticut. Her experience includes years in nonprofit and ESL teaching as well as four years at MIT supporting premed students while also advancing equity and inclusion among MIT staff, faculty, and students.

On September 22nd, the MGH Center for Diversity and Inclusion hosted a virtual Welcome and Recognition celebration to honor 9 award recipients and welcome newcomers. Paula Aduen, PhD, Onyinyechi Eke, MD and Jona Ludmir, MD, each received a 2021 Clinician-Teacher Development Award - sponsored by the MGPO and Equity and Community Health. Eman Akam, PhD, Efren Flores, MD, Yasmin Hernandez-Barco, MD, Gabriela Soriano Hobbs, MD Karla Ramos-Torres, PhD and Julia M. CPRS is a speaker series named in honor of MGH's late Professor Emeritus in Psychiatry, Chester Pierce. Dr. Pierce was the first and most senior African-American physician-scientist at MGH. Please join the CDI and RFC in celebrating this year’s Honk! Fest taking place in Nubian Square Roxbury. It will be a day filled with marching-style bands, community activism, food, fun, and celebrating the community and the many diverse businesses that make up Nubian Square. In collaboration with MGH Pediatrics, there will be a health fair table for adults and peds offering basic health maintenance checks (BP, Glucose, etc), as well as providing resources for mental health.

Fund for Medical Discovery Research Fellowship Awards

Applications are now being accepted by the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) for the Fund for Medical Discovery (FMD) Research Fellowship Awards!
What are they?
We recognize that research at MGH integrates the full translational spectrum of discovery from "bench to bedside to community and population.” To ensure that all areas of research conducted at MGH are included and eligible for FMD fellowship awards, ECOR is offering 3 types of training awards: fundamental research fellowships, clinical research fellowships, and population healthcare sciences fellowships. These fellowships are for MD and PhD Research Fellows and Clinical Research Fellows who are in the training phase of their research at MGH and Instructors who are within 5 years total since initiating their research fellowship training.
How much is each award?
The award will include a stipend of $53,760 plus applicable fringe benefits and 15% indirect costs.

MGH Research Scholars 2022

Applications are now being accepted by the Mass General Research Institute (MGRI) for the MGH Research Scholars program
What is it?
The MGH Research Scholars program was established with the aim of supporting MGH research faculty who are pursuing research at the level of Assistant and Associate Professor. The intent of these awards is to support the careers of outstanding MGH investigators doing cutting-edge research that is highly innovative and expected to result in fundamental scientific discoveries and/or clinical applications. MGH Research Scholar grants are awarded by the Mass General Research Institute (MGRI). Applicants will be asked to choose one of three categories based on their area of research: clinical research, fundamental research, or population and healthcare research.
How much is each award?
These awards are for $500,000 over 5 years; and will be funded at $100,000 per year, including 15% indirect costs.
When is the deadline?
Tuesday, November 2, 2021 – 5:00 PM

The MGH Claflin Distinguished Scholar Awards

What are the Claflin Awards?
Although women scientists are recruited to Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) programs, their advancement to senior faculty positions is still far less frequent than that of their male counterparts. In 1993, The Women in Academic Medicine Committee, originally chaired by Mrs. Jane D. Claflin, Honorary Trustee, was established to facilitate the academic careers of women in science at MGH. Recognizing that a significant obstacle to career advancement is the difficulty of maintaining research productivity during the child-rearing years, this Committee, with the sponsorship of the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR), established the Claflin Distinguished Scholar Awards. It is intended that this funding will increase opportunities for women to advance to senior positions in academic medicine.
How much is each award?
These are two year awards for $50,000 per year in direct costs, plus 15% for indirect costs.
When is the deadline?

The MGH Department of Medicine Residency Program is seeking applications for an Associate Program Director for Quality and Safety. The APD for Q&S has primary responsibility for the overall quality, safety and related education portfolio across the residency and will collaborate with department & program leadership to advance this work. Congratulations and Recognition |

Adeline A. Boatin, MD, MPH, of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was awarded a Pilot Innovation Award from the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Foundation. This award helps to promote and encourage development of early investigators from underrepresented minority populations to conduct research in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology. This will support Boatin’s research “Exploring the Cesarean Delivery Triple Burden: Examining Underuse, Overuse, and Quality of Cesarean Delivery in Ghana.”

Alzheimer's Association Research Grants for Yakeel Quiroz, PhD and Liliana Ramirez Gomez, MD
|
Yakeel T. Quiroz, PhD has been funded to study the protective effects of the ApoE Christchurch mutation in early onset Alzheimer’s disease.
Dr. Quiroz will also be joining the Board of Scientific Counselors to the National Institute on Aging until June 2026. The BSC advises the NIA Scientific Director and the Division of Intramural Research on matters related to in-house research activities.
Meanwhile, Liliana Ramirez Gomez, MD will be developing new ways of serving the unmet needs of Spanish-speaking dementia caregivers. We are incredibly fortunate to have such talented and devoted faculty members working in our department.
