September Update

Hello!

Hope your family enjoyed a nice summer break and that the transition back to school is going smoothly so far. Our clinicians are happy to be seeing many clients in person once again, and many of our therapists are now offering new classes and groups that start later this month. Please read on for more details about the sessions, as well as our upcoming Child Development Chat that can help answer your questions all about 504/IEP plans.

The world continues to be complicated, and massive global issues can certainly leave one feeling as if they have no control. If your child is struggling at home or finding that heading back to school is too difficult, please reach out to our staff. We want to help parents: whether it's finding appropriate resources, teaching families how to handle difficult behaviors, or identifying possible solutions to complex interpersonal situations. Parents can all use some new advice now and then!

Take care and be well.

Upcoming presentation:
"Parenting Past the Pandemic: A Guide for Returning to School."
Pediatricians and authors, Damon Korb, MD, and Tanya Altmann, MD, will guide families through the new normal and share advice about how to navigate school and home life as the pandemic continues. Join the online event on September 23 at 7:00 pm, hosted by the Common Ground Speaker Series.

New Classes & Groups
Growing Together: A Parent-Child Relationship Building Class
Growing Together is a new CDM therapy offering that uses gardening as a tool to foster communication. This hands-on activity allows for kids and parents to connect and talk in a fun environment. The new four-class session begins September 22. Please see the link for more information and contact the clinic to enroll!
Mindfulness for Teens
This CDM group will provide students with a supportive environment for them to learn how to be mindful. They will practice meditation, work on their communication and listening skills, and learn how to handle situations that make them feel stressed and/or angry. Group begins September 21, please see the link for more details.
New Support Group for Parents of Children with ADHD

Do you have a child with ADHD in your household? Ever wish you could connect with other families who are facing a similar parenting experience? Please join experienced therapist, Jennifer Rich, LMFT, in a session designed just for you. The group will meet online on September 14 to learn new tips and strategies to help manage the many challenges that families face when parenting their children and teens – especially when ADHD is in the mix.
Contact the clinic to register.

Research shows that the long-term outcomes of children with ADHD is better when the parents received educational training about the condition. To facilitate this, the CDM now offers “ADHD 101” for parents and caregivers every three months. The training will be facilitated by an experienced child and family therapist, Jennifer Rich, LMFT, and the session will be held via Zoom.

If you are interested, please contact the clinic to register and be given the online conference link information.
Child Development Chat Schedule
The Center for Developing Minds hosts free child development chats for parents, caregivers and clinicians throughout the year -- a service to the community that began in 2007. The informative, interactive sessions are moderated by pediatric and child development experts, and cover topics including child behavior, developmental concerns and parenting questions.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, upcoming chat sessions will be held virtually. Contact the clinic or see our website to register for the online link.

Tips for Transition Times

People are only capable of maintaining sustained attention for a limited amount of time. This was probably never been more obvious, as you watched your student struggle to stay engaged for hours on zoom this past year.

To improve focus and productivity all day, be sure to take periodic breaks. Here are some ideas to get your family up and away from your screens, give your brains and body the break they need, so you can get refocused.

Take some time this month to plan ahead and make a list of your own favorite "transition to-dos" for your family to turn to when the kids have a short class break, or you're looking to engage in a little fun afterschool!
Upcoming Rate Change
The fees for our therapists and our developmental & behavioral pediatrician have recently increased for new clients, and will be raised for all ongoing clients beginning in September, 2021. It is rare that we increase our clinic fees -- our last rate change for these clinicians occurred back in 2016 (physicians) and 2017 (therapists) -- but our clinic expenses have continued to rise over the past few years necessitating the adjustment. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Established seventeen years ago, the CDM clinical team includes experts in child behavior and development, psychology, education, therapy, and speech pathology. We provide the highest level of care to young children and students with autism, ADHD, behavioral struggles, learning disabilities, anxiety, speech and language delays, and depression.
