AUGUST 2025 NEWSLETTER

Dear CDOC Community,

As summer draws to a close and children return to school, we commemorate National Immunization Awareness Month, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of vaccination across the lifespan to help protect communities from serious diseases. The California Department of Public Health and other public health agencies recommend adding vaccines to back to school checklists to ensure that students stay healthy and ready to learn. This is a great time for families, providers, local health departments, and coalitions like ours to amplify this message and support healthier futures for California’s youth.

August 3–9 was California HPV Vaccine Week, which aims to raise awareness and promote HPV vaccination for children ages 9–12, reinforcing the vaccine’s role in preventing six types of cancer. In 2018, there were an estimated 43 million HPV infections in the US, with approximately 13 million new infections (Lewis Rm Fau – Laprise J-F, Laprise JF, Gargano JW, et al., 2021). HPV vaccination works best when given to boys and girls between ages 9 and 12 years. Special emphasis has been given to starting at age 9 to increase the success of completing the series by age 13 (ACS, 2025).

Although HPV Vaccine Awareness Week has officially passed in California, there is still time to disseminate the many valuable HPV vaccine resources developed by our partners at the California HPV Vaccine Roundtable. These tools include an updated campaign guide with ready-to-use messaging and social media assets. The Roundtable also hosted a webinar titled “The Power of Starting HPV Vaccination at Age 9” on Thursday, August 7th.

We wish all of our members a happy and healthy fall. We look forward to your continued collaboration through our workgroups and invite the participation of those who are not yet involved (Colorectal Cancer, Heath Equity, Survivorship, Lung Cancer Screening).

Lastly, a big thank you to everyone who completed the 2025 CDOC Member Survey! We were thrilled to receive our greatest annual member survey response to date. Your insights are instrumental in evaluating our partnerships, guiding program implementation, and shaping the future of our cancer control efforts. You can see how feedback has been utilized when our next evaluation report findings at a glance is released in the coming months.

Sincerely,

August 2025 Cancer Plan Corner Highlight

Chapter 7: Primary Prevention

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

The HPV vaccine protects against HPV strains that cause six types of cancers, including cancers of the cervix, oropharynx (throat), penis, vagina, vulva, and anus. Estimates show upwards of 80% of the population will be infected by HPV. Given the virus's widespread nature, vaccine series completion is recommended by age 13 for optimal cancer prevention.

Vaccination represents a key pillar for HPV-associated cervical cancer elimination efforts. Health systems are encouraged to increase the California Immunization Registry (CAIR) utilization so that state and local vaccination coverage data can be used to address community needs.

American Cancer Society Introduces CancerRisk360

To help improve cancer prevention and risk reduction, the American Cancer Society developed ACS CancerRisk360. This interactive online tool provides individuals a personalized, comprehensive assessment of cancer risk along with resources to empower and enable them to help reduce their risk of cancer through healthy lifestyles, regular cancer screening, and genetic counseling and testing direction.

CancerRisk360 provides individuals with an accessible, easy first step to prevent and detect cancer by offering a better understanding of several factors that impact a person’s individual risk. Through the free 5-10-minute CancerRisk360 assessment, individuals answer questions in four key areas:

  • Genetic and hereditary markers
  • Family history of cancer
  • Adherence to evidence-based cancer screening guidelines
  • Daily life factors, including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, diet, physical activity, and body weight
