Dear CDOC Community,
As we recognize Lung Cancer Awareness Month this November, we want to highlight the critical importance of lung cancer screening in California. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both our state and the nation; claiming more lives than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined (ACS, 2025).
Our Lung Cancer Screening Workgroup, co-led by CDOC and the American Cancer Society (ACS), continues its efforts to raise awareness and drive action. One key resource is the California Lung Cancer Story Map, launched last year by the Lung Cancer Screening Workgroup. This tool supports statewide screening efforts and remains a valuable asset for our community.
This month, we invite healthcare providers, health system leaders, public health professionals, lawmakers, and community partners to join us for an upcoming webinar: Showcase of California Lung Cancer Story Map: Opportunities to Accelerate Lung Cancer Screening Uptake in California, on Tuesday, November 18, from 12–1 p.m. PST. Participants will gain practical insights and resources to strengthen lung cancer screening efforts across the state.
Thank you to everyone who joined the CDOC All Members Meeting on October 21. It was a great opportunity to reconnect, share updates, and align on our collective goals in cancer control. In case you missed it, you may now view the recording here.

Showcase of California
Lung Cancer Story Map:
Opportunities to accelerate lung cancer screening uptake in California
Tuesday, November 18th | 12-1pm (PST)
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in California, accounting for more deaths than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Screening people at high risk with a quick, painless low-dose CT (LDCT) can detect disease early and save lives—but current estimates show that California’s screening rates remain among the lowest in the nation.
The California Dialogue on Cancer Lung Cancer Screening Workgroup, a group of diverse organizations led by the American Cancer Society, has launched the California Lung Cancer Story Map to help partners advance screening statewide.
We invite healthcare providers, health system leaders, public health professionals, lawmakers, and community partners to attend our webinar, Showcase of California Lung Cancer Story Map: Opportunities to Accelerate Lung Cancer Screening Uptake in California, on Tuesday, November 18, from 12–1 p.m. PST. Participants will gain practical insights and resources to strengthen lung cancer screening efforts across the state.

2021-2025 State Cancer Plan Corner
November 2025 Cancer Plan Corner Highlight
Chapter 8: Early Detection & Screening
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., more than colon, breast and prostate cancers combined (ACS, 2025).
Recent advances in lung cancer detection and treatment include the advent of annual screening with Low-Dose Computed Tomography (LDCT) in high risk individuals, shown to have a mortality benefit and now recommended by the U.S . Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), 3 and the development of targeted therapies.
