SEPTEMBER 2025 NEWSLETTER

Dear CDOC Community,

As we welcome September, we also recognize it as a powerful month of awareness and advocacy across the cancer control spectrum. This month, we honor and raise awareness for:

  • Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
  • Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month
  • Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
  • Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

September is also Latino Heritage Awareness Month and as we honor the Latino community's rich cultural contributions and history, we must also address the significant disparities in cancer outcomes and access to care they face, working together to improve cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment for all.

Each of these observances reminds us of the importance of early detection, equitable access to care, and the continued need for culturally responsive education, research, and support services. Whether you are a survivor, caregiver, advocate, or health professional, your work and voice are vital in advancing cancer prevention and control across California. You can find a variety of toolkits designed to promote awareness for all these cancers in the resource section at the end of the newsletter.

We’re especially proud to share that, CDOC has worked closely with childhood cancer partners and advocates to develop a brand-new Childhood Cancer chapter in the upcoming 2026–2035 State Cancer Plan. This addition reflects our shared commitment to addressing the unique needs of children and families impacted by cancer and ensuring their experiences are represented in statewide planning.

Lastly, we’re excited to invite you to the CDOC All Members on October 21st from 12:00 - 1:30 pm. This meeting will be a space for our entire coalition to come together, connect, and collaborate. California Lung Cancer Story Map

The California Dialogue on Cancer (CDOC) Lung Cancer Screening Workgroup launched this website to show the burden of lung cancer in California and emphasize the urgent need to increase screening rates and save the lives of Californians.

What's Included

• Interactive maps and Data Explorer Tool showing key lung cancer data throughout the state such as lung cancer burden, tobacco use, screening rates, and more

• Cohesive narrative that tells the story of lung cancer and screening in California

• Multimedia educational content such as graphics, videos, flyers, and social media assets

Why Does This Matter?

• Lung cancer is the #1 cause of cancer death in California and the U.S. More people die from lung cancer than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined

• Lung cancer screening saves lives – the screening test is quick, painless, and can catch cancer early when it may be easier to treat

• California’s lung cancer screening rates are among the lowest in the nation – we must change this!

Who is This For?

• Public health organizations

• Medical providers

• Lawmakers

• Other key lung cancer screening partners

• Not a patient or community education tool

Chapter 8: Early Detection & Screening

Following recommended cancer screening guidelines can prevent many deaths from cancer if positive screens are followed up with prompt and appropriate treatment. Early detection is an effective way to reduce mortality rates. Some cancers, if caught early, have a survival rate in excess of 95% five years after diagnosis.

Please visit our website to read more on the cancer plan's Early Detection & Screening objectives. You may also access the specific chapter here.
