CDPH COVID-19 Update: City of Chicago Reaches Record Low Deaths for the First Time Since September, New Vaccination Data and More
|
|
Earlier this week, Dr. Arwardy, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH), announced that COVID-19 related deaths continue trending down in Chicago. June 20 was the first day since late September that there was no deaths reported and we have had several days since that no deaths were reported.
Approximately 1,519,415 Chicagoans have received at least one dose of the vaccine and 50.3% of Chicagoans have completed a vaccine series. These percentages are higher in many of the zip codes located in the 42nd Ward, averaging closer to 70% of residents completing a vaccine series. Residents interested in learning more can click here to view the updated data.
CDPH encourages all those who have not been vaccinated to do so as soon as possible. According to Dr. Arwady, all three of the vaccines being used in the United States continued to perform well against the Delta (and other) variants. For example, the 2-dose Pfizer vaccine is still 88% protective. Importantly, the protection against hospitalization and death remains very good. Going back to January when the vaccine was first fully available, 97% of Chicagoans who were hospitalized or died from COVID were not fully vaccinated. This has remained true even as variants have emerged.
|
|
Many of the City-run mass vaccination sites have closed down, however, the following sites are still open with the details listed below. Individuals can still schedule appointments for these locations and others here.
Malcolm X College (1900 W. Jackson Boulevard)

Masks must be worn when entering and remaining in city buildings, including in lobbies, elevators, hallways, customer service areas, and restrooms.
Finally, the City encourages everyone who has not been vaccinated and is able to do so to get vaccinated. This is the best way to protect yourself, your family, friends and colleagues against COVID-19. For more information on vaccines, please visit www.chi.gov/covidvax.

"Make Summer Yours" Programming for Chicago's Youth
|
|
Earlier this week, the City launched “Make Summer Yours,” an all-ages and citywide approach to summer programming across all 81 Library locations. From June 28 through August 22, “Make Summer Yours” offers a mix of online and in-person events and resources focused on education, engagement, and safety. This year’s theme explores public art, creative expression, and community activism.
Chicago Public Library’s research-based and award-winning Summer Learning Challenge for children and teens is designed to develop literacy skills and provide opportunities for cultural enrichment and civic engagement outside of the structured classroom setting. According to research from the Brookings Institute, children who are not engaged in learning over the summer lose up to three months of math and science knowledge, which puts them significantly behind their peers.
For kids 0-13 and their caregivers, “Start With Art” explores identity, community, and creative expression through interactive challenges, reading, games, grab-and-go activity kits, and events. Participation in the Summer Learning Challenge encourages 20 minutes of daily reading and completing five thematic activities—such as visiting the library, examining a neighborhood mural, or creating a piece of art.
The Teen Summer Challenge, “Make Space. Take Action.,” for teens 13-18 encourages self-expression and local activism through art, social justice, digital media production, and neighborhood greenification. “Make Space. Take Action.” highlights include grab-and-go kits developed in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art, social media internships, and multiple mural installations coordinated with local artists. CPL librarians and staff will also be trained as My Chi. My Future navigators to help young people find activities and opportunities to stay engaged all summer long.
For summer registration for kids and teens, mainstage virtual events, and more information, visit chipublib.org/summer.

Amy Sherald captured the former First Lady against light-blue background, sitting and gazing directly at the viewer. Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald are the first African American artists commissioned to paint portraits for the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery’s collection of a former President and First Lady. A musical score will accompany the piece. The original paintings that inspire our projections can be viewed at the Art Institute of Chicago June 18 – August 15.

Volunteer Opportunity in the 42nd Ward
|
|
Almost Home Kids (AHK) is a short-term community-based pediatric healthcare center that brings together medical professionals, recreational volunteers, community providers, sponsors, donors, friends, corporate and civic partners. Open since 2012, AHK is licensed by the Department of Public Health and located at 211 E. Grand Ave (on the 6th floor of the Ronald McDonald House).
Almost Home Kids provides a bridge from hospital to home for children with medical complexities by: educating and empowering families with the training, skills and confidence needed to care for their child in their own home; coordinating all the community-based medical and social services the child and family will need and providing respite care when needed in a home-like setting.
At this time, they are recruiting volunteers that are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 to join their volunteer team. They especially need weekend-only volunteers in Chicago.
As a recreational volunteer you will help with activities with the children such as playing a game, reading a book or just simply rocking a baby to sleep. Opportunities are available 7 days a week for a 2-hour shift commitment each time. You can self-select your shifts making it very flexible and convenient.
Please reach out to Lisa Snow, Community Outreach Coordinator at lsnow@almosthomekids.org or call her at (630) 786-1755 to learn more about how to sign up for an orientation and make a difference at Almost Home Kids.
