South Dakota State University Promoting Leadership in Advanced-Research Computing for INterdisciplinary Sectors 2021 (SDSU PLAINS REU 2021) 

REU Site participants will be engaged in an intensive tenweek program that use High Performance Computing (HPC), Big Data, and computationally intensive models in the areas of:
• Mathematics, Statistics & Computational Sciences
• HPC Cyberinfrastructure Development & Optimization
• Engineered Systems
• Biological & Medical Sciences

Student participants will be actively engaged in next generation training through our HPC/Big-Data Bootcamp. In addition, REU Site participants will participate in holistic, integrated research activities focused on the Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research, Emotional Intelligence, and Career Development. The REU Site also has a variety of extracurricular activities to let you experience the great State of South Dakota!

This REU Site is seeking students who have completed one to two years of college and who are majoring in mathematics, statistics, engineering, computational sciences, biological sciences, technology, or a related discipline. Students who are attending community or four-year colleges are encouraged to apply!

Position: Intern – Scientific/Quality Control

Hours:
Part-Time during school year, full time during summer

Your Role:
The Quality Control lab is a laboratory environment requiring the ability to carry out laboratory operating procedures in a safe manner, while maintaining a clean and orderly workspace. The Quality Control Intern will assist senior staff with advanced chemical analysis techniques (HPLC, GC, IR, etc.), accurately record and report data and maintain glassware and laboratory equipment.

Who You Are:
• Junior or Senior level college with coursework in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering (especially Quantitative Analysis)
• Outstanding math skills
• Strong Documentation Practices
• Ability to read, follow and understand operating procedures.
• Comfortable working with computers and fluent with Excel spreadsheets.
• Interest in working in a scientific field.
• Reading and writing English communication skills.
• Laboratory setting Personal Protective Equipment required.

This is a paid internship.
Scheduled hours are part time during the school year, and full time during the summer.

Climate Risk Labs builds partnerships with Research Institutions, Universities, and Communities of Experts.

They use science to address global problems, gain understanding in a radically uncertain world and to build solutions that improve people’s lives. They do this by creating communities of experts across the world and giving them access to a platform for collaborating and disseminating the latest science. They combine technical analysis and effective advocacy to identify the risks and opportunities of climate change, to develop practical clean energy driven solutions, and to accelerate positive change.

9H Energy Research Foundation is the University of Wyoming partner of Climate Risk Labs. 9H Energy is building a non-commercial 0.5-3MW Solar Generation Research Facility on a portion of the private 12,000-acre 9H Ranch located in Albany County, Wyoming.

9H Research Foundation has committed to building a Student Research Center as a philanthropic effort that will gift clean energy to the University of Wyoming’s College of Engineering and Applied Science. As a result, 9H energy has made long-term commitments in Clean Energy focused professorships, research, grants, and student internships with the goal of helping the University become the premier higher education and research center for clean energy. 9H Energy is sponsoring student design projects including an engineering senior design competition with a $5,000 prize. 9H Energy is also funding student groups to design and build solar prototypes and energy storage projects.

The Student Research Center will generate data used by companies to determine the viability of future commercial facilities and operations in the Laramie area. This will position the University of Wyoming as an elite renewable Energy school, generating opportunities for students while creating local jobs and economic growth for the state.

Job Description
The Intern will be responsible for strategizing and implementing:
• Social media marketing and media
• Grant research, support, and writing
• Diversifying fundraising streams
• Corporate and community donator outreach

The Intern will study and learn the critical skills necessary to market and fund a Solar Energy non-profit including, foundation research, grant writing, copy editing, storytelling, donor relations, event planning, website management, social media campaigns, and more. Through participation in meetings, the intern will be exposed to all aspects of the 9H Energy Research Foundation and Climate Risk Labs to understand best practices as well as standards of excellence. Through this unpaid internship, students will be able to gain valuable experience which will differentiate them in the job market upon graduation.
