CEBC welcomes new members
The Clean Energy Business Council (CEBC) is proud and pleased to welcome the new members joining the CEBC family.
CEBC welcomes Dr. Waddah Ghannem to its advisory board
CEBC proudly welcomes Dr. Waddah S. Ghanem Al Hashmi as non-executive board adviser. Dr. Al Hashmi graduated from the University of Wales College Cardiff, School of Engineering, with a Bachelor of Engineering Degree (Honors) in Environmental Engineering, holds two Diplomas in Environmental Management and Safety Management from the United Kingdom, an MSc in Environmental Sciences from the UAE University, an Executive MBA from University of Bradford in the UK. His Doctoral research focused on Corporate Governance and Leadership was also completed through the University of Bradford in the UK.
Waddah is currently the Executive Director of EHSSQ & Corporate Affairs at the ENOC Group in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. In his capacity, Waddah is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of best practices and standards for EHS, Business Excellence & Quality, Sustainability, Security and Risk Management as well as Wellness and Social Affairs and advocates the continued improvement of the company’s EHSSQ culture through his leadership of the company’s EHSSQ regional team. Waddah also oversees the Group’s Legal Affairs as well as the development and implementation of the ENOC Group Communication Strategy to support commercial growth and strategic positioning. 

CEBC partners with EEG on a panel discussion about “Sustainable Cities and Communities”
The Future Mobility Club (FMC) is a CEBC initiative to foster the clean mobility sector. With more than 25 member companies, the FMC is launching its first public event on the 26th of June, from 5pm to 8pm, in Dubai. During the event, the FMC will launch its first community awareness initiative to educate the public about future mobility with a focus on electric vehicles and bew energy vehicles.

ACWA Power signed contract to build 500 MW PV project
A consortium comprising Saudi Arabia-based utility developer ACWA Power (CEBC board member) with Kuwait’s Gulf Investment Corporation and Alternative Energy Projects Company signed agreement to develop a 500-megawatt solar power plant in Oman.

The consortium won the contract in March to develop the project, called Ibri-2 Independent Power Producer, for the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP). The winning bid proposed the best economic tariff for electricity sold to OPWP.

Dentons celebrates 50 years in the United Arab Emirates
Dentons, the world’s largest law firm, celebrates its 50 year anniversary in the United Arab Emirates this month.
The Firm was subsequently involved in landmark events in the UAE’s history, with Dentons’ lawyers acting as the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's legal counsel and helping to draft the treaty that united the Emirates. Other major projects which Dentons was involved in include advising on the construction of the Dubai World Trade Centre, which was the first sky scraper in the Arab World.
Paul Jarvis , Dentons' Managing Partner for the Middle East, said, “Building a nation all begins with having a vision. As we look back 50 years, we can admire how far the United Arab Emirates has come and be proud of the part Dentons has played in its success through many of its key milestones. MAF lists world's first benchmark corporate Green Sukuk
May 15, 2019: Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) (CEBC member) rang the market-opening bell at Masdaq Dubai to mark the listing of the world's first benchmark corporate Green Sukuk, and the first Green Sukuk issued by a corporate in the region.

Valued at $600 million and with a tenor of 10 years, the Green Sukuk is testament to Majid Al Futtaim's long term commitment to support the transition to a low carbon economy. The investment will be used to finance and refinance Majid Al Futtaim's existing and future green projects, including green buildings, renewable energy, sustainable water management, and energy efficiency.

Schneider Electric Acquires Stake In AutoGrid
Schneider Electric (CEBC member), a leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, has announced an investment in AutoGrid, a leader in flexibility management software for the energy industry.

The investment makes Schneider Electric a major shareholder in the company and establishes a co-innovation partnership focused on driving new AI and machine learning solutions for the utilities and commercial and industrial companies.

Application for the 2019 MENA Green Building Award is now open
The application period for the 2019 MENA Green Building Awards is now open. The 2019 MENA Green Building Awards recognizes and celebrates the achievements and success stories of organisations across the region who are supporting the industry's rapid transition to a net zero future. 

Organised by EmiratesGBC, the awards has 20 categories including, for the first time in the region, an award reconsigning a Zero Building Design or a Zero Building. 

The awards are endorsed by  World Green Building Council and held in partnership with regional Green Building Councils:  JordanLebanonEgyptKuwaitMorocco and  Palestine

Communiqué of the Alliance in the margin of the UNESCO Water Conference
Two months ago, to mark World Water Day, the World Bank Group issued a comprehensive report “The Role of Desalination in an Increasingly Water-Scarce World” and the US President’s National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) released its “Coordinated Strategic Plan to Advance Desalination for Enhanced Water Security”. UNESCO’s International Water Conference, which took place in Paris on 13 and 14 May 2019, reminds us, once again, of the urgent need for the international community to scale-up its efforts in addressing the booming demand for water and water security.

11th International Solar Photovoltaic Exhibition, Guangzhou 2019

ZNShine Solar inks 100-MW module supply deal in Dubai
Chinese solar module maker ZNShine PV-Tech Co Ltd, or ZNShine Solar, has inked an agreement to supply 100 MW of its panels for various projects as part of the Shams Dubai initiative.
The Chinese company signed the deal with Etihad Energy after winning a tender launched by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in January. ZNShine will supply modules for installation on the rooftops of villas in Dubai under a project developed by DEWA and Etihad Esco.

Egypt: Egypt expects giant solar park to be fully operational in 2019.
Egypt expects the 1.6 gigawatt solar park it is building in the south of the country to be operating at full capacity in 2019, the investment ministry said in a statement on Sunday. The $2 billion project, set to be the world’s largest solar installation, has been partly funded by the World Bank, which invested $653 million through the International Finance Corporation.  [Read More]

Jordan: FRV and TSK complete 66.7MW solar project in Jordan.
Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), part of Abdul Latif Jameel Energy, has started commercial operations at the 66.7MW Al Safawi solar plant in northern Jordan, its third PV project in the country. The plant, which covers an area of around 150 hectares, will produce enough energy to supply the equivalent of 21,000 Jordanian homes. [Read More]

Morocco: Masdar, EDF to build 800MW solar power plant in Morocco.
The consortium is led by EDF through its EDF Renewables subsidiary and includes the UAE-based renewable energy company Masdar and Moroccan independent power producer Green of Africa. The plant will be located 20km north of the town of Midelt in central Morocco, in the high plains surrounding the Moulouya River and between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains. [Read More]

Tunisia: Eni, ETAP partner to develop renewable energy projects in Tunisia
The project, which was awarded to the ETAP-Eni consortium following a public tender issued by the Tunisian authorities in accordance with the country's licensing regulations, will supply electricity to the State-owned company Société Tunisienne de l'Electricité et du Gaz (STEG). The project will be carried out by a new joint venture between Eni and ETAP which focuses exclusively on the production of energy from renewables. [Read More]

Palestine: Palestine’s 1st solar park to go live in June
The first solar park in the Palestinian Territories, having a capacity of 7.5 MW, will be put on stream in June. The Noor Jericho photovoltaic (PV) park, being constructed in Jericho governorate, will be part of a 200-MW scheme, Noor Palestine, that will be installed over the next eight years. 

Iraq: Iraq Launches First Round Of Tender For 755MW Of Solar.
Iraq's Ministry of Electricity has launched a first-round tender for 755MW of PV capacity by inviting solar companies to participate. The projects across the five provinces of Babel, Wasit, Karbala, Al-Muthanna and Diwaniyah are expected to be completed by the end of 2020. The Ministry will also provide logistical, technical and legal services for other sites in southern and western Iraq, according to a Ministry statement. [Read More]

Sudan: Solar Energy to Power Humanitarian Hub in Malakal by 2020
Thanks to a new private sector collaboration linking Scandinavia to Sub-Saharan Africa, the Norwegian company, Scatec Solar, will be helping the International Organization for Migration harness solar energy to power a significant part of its ongoing joint humanitarian operations in Malakal, South Sudan, by early next year . Scatec Solar has connected the next part of its 400 MW tracking and bifacial PV plant to the grid in Egypt’s Benban complex. The entire project is set to fully come online throughout the second half of the year. Meanwhile, the company has also secured additional funding for a 33 MW solar project in Mali. [Read More]

Blue Solutions on why it’s betting on solid-state batteries
France’s Blue Solutions, electrical energy storage award winner at The smarter E Europe in Munich, Germany, says it has developed the only commercialized solid-state lithium battery. The company already has two factories up and running in France and Canada for its Bluestorage Lithium Metal Polymer (LMP) battery. Shanghai Electric to build 280 MW in Australia
Chinese power group Shanghai Electric will handle engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the 280 MW Cultana Solar Farm that Simec Energy Australia is developing. The PV project is part of Gupta’s ambitious  renewable energy  plans for the South Australian industrial town of Whyalla. [Read More]
