From the Executive Director
Give yourself the gift of time in nature. Life can be stressful, especially over the past few years. A good and wise friend once told me that being more productive and solving problems involves keeping a positive mindset or focusing on the good. This also helps to create a “healthier you”.

Generally we can’t control what is happening around us, but we can control what is inside of us even during challenging times. Science has shown that when we take the time to focus on ourselves, as through meditation or just quietly focusing on our own breathing, we build connections in our brain for a healthier, positive inner mind. One scientifically proven way to help refocus and recharge your brain and build neural connections within our insula is just spending a few minutes in nature, experiencing our senses in nature, and checking in on our own selves; breathing, movement, thoughts. If you do not believe me, try it out for yourself.

At CEED, we are working on bringing more science talks, art experiences, and mindfulness connections with nature to you. These are great ways to remove yourself from the stressful hustle and bustle of everyday life and recharge yourself to take on life’s next challenges.

Please continue to support our efforts and give what you can, whether it's the gift of time, experience, promotion, or financial….all of that helps to create a thriving Center for Environmental Education and Discovery for you.

Wave Makers
Worms and Composting
The past few weeks our Wave Makers have been exploring what it takes to make good compost and how nature composts. They have also gone on a quest for tardigrades, otherwise known as water bears or moss piglets. Never saw a moss piglet? Join Wave Makers to find out and explore.
Owls and Shooting Stars!

Join CEED and Vanderbilt Planetarium for a night to remember …

Our popular combination IS BACK… Owls and Astronomy! After our short owl talk, we will head out on our trails to see if we can hear our local owls hooting. We will also keep our eyes out for flying squirrels, fox, bats, opossums, and other noctural critters.

After the night hike, you will be tantalized with a powerful telescope and someone who knows how to use it… our Special Guest, Charlie Eder, an astrophysicist and educator from the Vanderbilt Planetarium! This should be a great night to see shooting stars from the Orionid Meteor Shower. We encourage you to bring your own telescopes if you wish, binoculars, and even cameras to practice long-exposure photography.

As of Sunday, the forecast for Friday is relatively clear skies and very low chance of rain. Fingers-crossed, it could be a great night for seeing both owls and stars.

Friday, October 21, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. at the Washington Lodge, 287 South Country Road, Brookhaven NY. $20 per adult, $10 for seniors and veterans, $10 per child ages 8-16, children 7 and under are free!

We are a Blue Star Museum! If you are active in the military, bring your military I.D and you and your family are free! Please register and select military. Please note this is only for people in the military and immediate family members.
Learn and Create using Nuno Felting with Oksana Danziger
Felting is a user-friendly technique that is simple to learn and create beautiful pieces. Wool is a magical fiber with tiny scales that stick together, which allows the user to create a pattern on felt using a needle tool. This process of melding fibers together can be used to achieve a beautiful watercolor effect on fabric.

Join this workshop, where you will learn the nuno felting technique (wet felting) over the course of 3 hours and after that you will take home a beautiful eyeglass case.

Demonstration of technique and examples of the project will be presented at the beginning of the class.

The registration cost of $75 not only provides the opportunity to learn this fascinating technique, but all supplies are included as well. Please click the link or email info@ceedli.org to register.

Please visit Oksana's website to learn more www.oksanafiberstudio.com

Get Onboard for Quail 2023!
Last year was one of the best ever for our Northern Bobwhite Quail Project. We released over 800 quail at five sites, including right here at CEED.

We hope you are reporting any bobwhite quail sightings on iNaturalist. If you don’t have this great nature tool, you can get it at inaturalist.org

Meanwhile, we are working hard to hone our quail programs and make them even better for teachers, students, and for the quail as well. If you have been on our Quail Mail list, don’t worry, you’ll hear from us about program registration for 2023 in the very near future. If you’d like to be informed about our quail programs – with no obligation – please click below.

CEED’s Northern Bobwhite Quail Project is available for schools, libraries, scouts, and other organizations – of all ages.

It's only a few months till hatching time!

Remember CEED during your Holiday Purchases.
With the holidays coming up, many of us are jumping ahead on the gift buying for friends and family. If you happen to be on Amazon, please consider checking out our list and purchasing one of the many items listed. Even a small purchase helps us grow. All of the items listed are helpful for our programs and or maintenance of the lodge. Many have already purchased some much needed supplies, and we are excited with all the new items to use for our education programs, gardening and more. If you have purchased an item and would like a thank you and acknowledgement for tax purposes, please email info@ceedli.org. Most of the items we have received do not have the name of the donor with it.

These education supplies, maintenance supplies, gardening and cleaning tools will help us offer more programs and opportunities for our community. Here is a list of some of the items we could use. Don’t forget to purchase the items using Amazon SMILE, which will give back even more!

A Moment of Gratitude!
CEED moved into the Washington Lodge in 2018, just 5 short years ago. In August of 2019, we hired our first employees and just 7 months later, everything shut down with COVID. We made it through those challenging times, thanks to hard work and support from the community. Looking at the past year, we have really grown, and what is quite moving is the list of all the organizations that helped us get to where we are today. Here is a list of several of the organizations that either booked programs with us, partnered in events, supported us with sponsorship or donations, donated skilled advice, expertise, or materials and more.
