B.K.S. IYENGAR

Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar, founder of Iyengar Yoga, a variation of hatha yoga, is considered to be one of the most respected and recognized yoga teachers in the world.

Born December 14, 1918 in Bellur, India, the 11th of 13 children. He taught his first class in 1936. According to the BBC, Iyengar Yoga is now taught in more than 70 countries and his books have been translated into 13 languages.

Mr. Iyengar was named the world's 100 most influential people in Time Magazine 2004, and won 3 of India's highest civilian honors: Padma Shri 1991, Padma Bhushan 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan 2014.

He died in Pune, India, August 20, 2014 survived by his six children Geeta, Prashant, Sunita, Savita, Suchita, and Vanita Iyengar.

I would like to take a moment to reflect on the true gift of yoga and the legacy Mr. Iyengar or Guruji (as he is so lovingly called), has shared.

As words could never really fulfill the meaning of what yoga is to any one person, it's safe to assume that our gratitude comes in the form of practice and sharing yoga at his behest.

Though I never met him, he was still able to reach me. I will be forever grateful for the divine knowledge and wisdom he imparted.

OM Shanti

Enjoy a collage of pictures of Mr. Iyengar throughout his years.

"The art of teaching is tolerance. Humbleness is the art of learning. Yoga uses the body to discipline the mind and to reach the soul."

"Look after the root of the tree, and the fragrant flower and luscious fruits will grow by themselves. Look after the health of the body, and the fragrance of the mind and richness of the spirit will follow."

"Sometimes our body is willing, but our mind is weak. Sometimes our mind is willing, but our body is weak. Do not be afraid. Strive to extend your capacity but do not be disappointed with yourself. What does not challenge us, cannot change us."
B.K.S. Iyengar
TRAVELING LIBRARY!!

Keep an eye out for the next greatest yoga resource. Periodically each Iyengar Yoga studio in our region will have the opportunity to host a traveling library containing texts on the sutras, the history of Iyengar Yoga and past conferences, as well as CDs, DVDs and videos! Details to come.

"Do not think of yourself as a small, compressed, suffering thing. Think of yourself as graceful and expanding, no matter how unlikely it may seem at the time."

COMMUNITY BUSINESS
JOIN THE IYENGAR YOGA CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION BY PERFORMING 100 DAYS OF NAIRANTARYA (uninterrupted) SADHANA (practice) WITH THESE SEQUENCES
WRITTEN BY HOLLY WALCK KOSTURA!

“He wants us to practice. He wants us to practice. He wants us to practice.”
-Patricia Walden, on Guruji’s wish for our community after his passing.

Who? Yoga practitioners from all traditions around the world whose lives have been influenced by Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar’s teachings.

What? 8 sequences for all level practitioners, written by Senior Teacher, Holly Kostura, to honor the distinguished legacy of B.K.S. Iyengar in the year of his 100th birth anniversary by practicing for 100 consecutive days. Included with the sequences is daily philosophy study of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali for each level of practitioner.

When? For a long time, uninterruptedly and with a devotional mind!

Why 8 Sequences? The number eight was chosen because it is shaped like the infinity symbol. The gifts that Yoga, as taught by Sage Patanjali and Sri Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar, have offered humankind are infinite, like the Soul, the aim or goal of Yoga practice.

The first seven sequences are to be used by all level practitioners. To use these sequences, simply start practicing with the first asana and continue straight through to the end.

If the sequence includes one or more poses you have not yet learned or that are beyond your skill level, skip over them and continue down the list until you reach the next pose that you do practice. Pick back up from that point in the sequence and continue on in that manner, skipping over poses you do not practice and picking up with the ones you do practice, until you reach Savasana.

Practice the final, or 8th sequence, which is restorative, if you are experiencing physical or mental fatigue, are unwell or recovering from illness, or if you are menstruating.

How do I get the sequences? Email  [email protected]

"The cure to combat the three Ss- stress, strain, and speed- can be found in three Ws- the work of devoted practice, the wisdom that comes of understanding the self and the world, and worship because ultimately surrendering to what we cannot control allows the ego to relax and lose the anxiety of its own infinitesimally small self in the infinitude of the divine."
