Job Description:

WEST is seeking a candidate for a paid internship in ecological data science. This internship program is co-funded by the University of Wyoming EPSCoR Program and Western EcoSystems Technology (WEST), Inc. The goal is to increase the intern’s competitiveness for computational and data science careers in academic, government, and/or commercial settings. The internship can begin this summer and may extend into the fall depending on the project and intern availability.

 

This internship is a part of WY-ACT: Anticipating the Climate-Water Transition and Cascading Challenges to Socio-Environmental Systems in America's Headwaters. There are multiple possible intern projects as WEST works with a variety of partners within the state of Wyoming on topics that relate to climate and water systems. Project selection will be determined by considering intern strengths and goals along with partner needs. The intern will be supervised and mentored by a WEST data scientist, with the opportunity to interact and work with multiple additional staff members from WEST and our partners.

 

Interns will be employees of WEST. The number of hours worked per week can be flexible. Each internship can be as many as 300 hours; however, because interns will be employees of WEST, there may be opportunities for interested candidates to conduct additional paid work assisting WEST projects.

Project Description: The School of Computing, in collaboration with Bill Gates' Nuclear Innovation Company TerraPower LLC and ArgonneNational Laboratory, has established a project for designing and simulating next-generation nuclear power plants for Wyoming. The initial research and development work focuses on software development and support work for the ARMI Framework (https://terrapower.github.io/armi/) with a plan working towards future collaboration interests of integrating Argonne National Lab's OpenMC Monte Carlo neutronic code with ARMI and the development of a Nuclear Reactor Digital Twin. Mechanical Engineering Intern with UW


Summary:

An opportunity is available for a Mechanical/Energy Systems Engineering student to assist in designing and building experimental & educational systems for a wide range of disciplines across the UW campus in the Engineering Shop. This hands-on internship position is multiple parts: System integration, mechanical design, CAD modeling and time spent working in the shops (fabrication, machining, soldering, wiring, daily upkeep, etc…). The position will be up to to 20hr/week during the Fall 2023 Semester, pending what the selected candidate’s course schedule allows. Hourly Rate: $12/hr, no overtime.


Who we are:

The Engineering Shop, located in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, is the only research, educational and academic support shop on the UW campus. We provide a wide variety of design and fabrication services to the UW community including students, staff, faculty, and full-time researchers.


Minimum requirements:

  • Be actively pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical/Energy Systems Engineering
  • Have completed Mechanics of Materials, Electrical Circuits I & Statics/Dynamics courses (Sophomore level & up)
  • Maintain good interpersonal communication, listening skills & ability to discuss technical concepts with co-workers & customers  Have some Solidworks/Fusion 360 experience & desire to learn/implement more
  • Have some related shop experience (fabrication, machining, working w/power tools) & willingness to learn more as needed  Have spent some time working with electricity, electronics or circuits


Preferred requirements

  • Having spent time working in a manufacturing/machine shop or other construction/industrial setting
  • Experience completing machining/welding, mechanical/electrical repair and diagnosis of equipment

  • Understand analog to digital conversion, boolean logic, electrical noise, data/controls systems, etc. 


Duties:

You may be asked to perform a wide range of tasks to meet the shop’s needs, including:

  • Machine shop daily duties (Machining, using hand tools, sweeping, organizing & cleaning as needed)
  • Mechanical design
  • Generate solid models, assemblies, and detailed fabrication drawings – Solidworks or Fusion 360
  • Generate detailed cost estimates
  • Generate basic system schematics
  • Electrical wiring
  • Repair laboratory equipment, including soldering & troubleshooting
  • Troubleshoot using tools such as oscilloscope, multi-meter & other basic hand tools


Training:

The Systems and Manufacturing intern will undergo training including hands-on time working with shop staff, opportunity to learn LabVIEW/Electronics programming and financial assistance with Solidworks certifications. Meteorologist


GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Senior-level meteorologist in the Planning Section within the Air Quality Resource Management Program of the Air Quality Division. This position is primarily responsible for serving as a member of the meteorological forecasting team for the prediction of wintertime ozone formation conditions in the Upper Green River Basin and wildfire smoke impacts throughout the State of Wyoming. The incumbent will also be responsible for the enhancement, development, maintenance, implementation, and customer support of the IMPACT data management system.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Participates in the AQD's meteorological forecasting team assembled to predict when wintertime elevated ozone may form in the Upper Green River Basin (UGRB).
  • Participates in the AQD's meteorological forecasting team assembled to predict when wildfire smoke will impact the State of Wyoming.
  • Assists with evaluation and improvement of techniques incorporating the most up-to-date and appropriate data to forecast favorable elevated ozone formation and wildfire smoke conditions.
  • Serves as part of the project team for the enhancement, development, and maintenance of the IMPACT data management system, including assisting with requirements gathering, review of information and deliverables, tracking development features, and providing assistance to address air quality data management needs and integration with department-wide information technology and paperless initiatives.

Qualifications
