Message from the Editor:

It has certainly been a challenging few years, however the compassion and dedication our communities have for coming together to help one another in time of need never ceases to amaze me. As we look forward to 2023 our hope is to continue to build and strengthen the relationships we have and to grow and foster new ones. Each time we have a CERT graduation I am so proud of everyone for taking the time to learn new skills or refresh them to help save lives. We are all in this together and together we will move forward and take our CERT Programs to the next level. Hoping you all have a Happy, Healthy and Safe Holiday Season!

Thank you all for your time and dedication to making our communities more resilient. You are truly making a difference!

Remembrance for Suzanne Tateosian at

National CERT Association Conference

Dena Gunning Central County Fire Department Community Risk & Resiliency Specialist and CERT Program Manager delivered the remembrance for beloved City of Burlingame Deputy CERT Volunteer Coordinator Suzanne Tateosian at the first annual National CERT Association Conference in Galveston, Texas in August of this year. A moment of silence was observed for all CERTs friends, family and neighbors lost in the last few years.

CERT PROGRAM UPDATE

We are excited to announce the transition of the CCFD Burlingame and Hillsborough CERT Program from 'Catch and Release' to Train and Retain'. The executive approval comes at a pivotal time for CCFD CERT as the San Mateo County Emergency Services Council approved the CERT Mutual Aid Program for the county back in July. Effective January 1, 2023 the CCFD CERT Program will follow the new Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the Program and will provide more opportunities to participate in drills, exercises, and advanced and supplemental training such as: Animal Response, Communications, Crowd Management, Flood Response, CERT Leadership, and Firefighter Rehab. We look forward to collaborating and working together in partnership, this is our opportunity to take our CERT Programs to the next level.

CERT LEADERSHIP GROUP OBSERVES CCFD USAR DRILL

CCFD CERT Leadership group was invited to attend and observe the San Mateo Countywide Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Drill on Tuesday, November 15th hosted by CCFD in Burlingame. Participants were able to observe USAR Teams from six agencies in action as they exercised their USAR capabilities. It was an exciting day that included a real world event. A 5.1 magnitude earthquake centered in Alum Rock just south east of San Mateo County occurred, another friendly reminder that we live in earthquake country. What was so exciting? Several of us have the MyShake APP that worked to notify us seconds before the mild tumbler occurred. If you don't already have the MyShake APP download it today! It's FREE and can provide life saving seconds when they count the most.

Earthquake Warning California

Earthquake Warning California is the country’s first publicly available, statewide warning system that could give California residents crucial seconds to take cover before you feel shaking. Managed by the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), Earthquake Warning California uses ground motion sensors from across the state to detect earthquakes before humans can feel them and can notify Californians to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” in advance of an earthquake.
