Early Modern Temporalities series
Tuesday, October 26, 2021
10:00am-11:00am CDT

The Early Modern Temporalities Fall 2021 Virtual Talk Series brings several experts in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century art, literature, and culture to UT Austin. In an era well-known for its varied, contested, and often unreliable technologies for measuring and tracking time, how did writers and artists conceive of, process, innovate, and influence approaches to time? Zooming in from destinations ranging from London to California, these scholars will help us to explore this topic by sharing current research concerned both with manifestations of time in the early modern period and our own tools, methods, and approaches for talking about it today.
Dr. Sarah Lewis has co-edited a collection of essays, Family Politics in Early Modern Literature (Palgrave, 2017), and her monograph, Time and Gender on the Shakespearean Stage (CUP, 2020), analyzes the cultural and theatrical intersections of early modern temporal concepts and gendered identities. Dr. Lewis is currently a co-director of the research network, Grasping Kairos, a group of scholars working across disciplines, geographies and time periods to further our understanding of the cultural, political, literary, artistic, philosophical, theological and historical construction of the opportune moment. She is particularly interested in the tension between moment and duration on the early modern stage. Dr. Lewis is a member of the Performance@King’s network, and is a co-convener of the London Shakespeare Seminar (2020-21).

Dr. Tamara Lewis holds a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Lewis' research examines the ways Protestant doctrine was used in the development of racial ideologies in early modern England. This involves tracing how theological beliefs were applied to and shaped emerging discourses and practices regarding skin color differences in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Moreover, I analyze early modern perspectives about theological anthropology and somatic difference in relation to England’s burgeoning participation in the transatlantic human trade, slavery, and colonialism.
Dr. John M. Meyer received his Ph.D. from UT Austin. His current research portfolio centers on the British general Orde Wingate, and his peers, rivals, and superiors. The larger themes of John's work include ethical and unethical behavior during war, risk-taking in combat, and competition within military units. John also studies why states deploy special operations forces, and why individuals choose to join such units. In addition to receiving funding from the National Science Foundation, he has received support from the Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research, the Program in British, Irish, and Empire Studies, and the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies.

The Balkan Circle is a weekly seminar where lectures, presentations, exhibits, or open interactive dialogues will focus on any (and all) aspects of historical, political, economic, social and cultural phenomena in the (so-called) Balkans. The seminar is free and open to the public and will be held every Friday during the semester from 12:00 pm to 1:15 pm.
We are very pleased that our online format led to greater engagement from the international community. Keeping this in mind, we've decided to continue our online presentations rather than regroup in our tiny second-floor conference room (as charming as it is). We will have occasional "in-person" speakers, but they will also be live-streamed to the international audience to allow for continued participation among The Circle.
