CESSRST-II Quarterly Highlights

Dr. Fred Moshary

Director, NOAA Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies (CESSRST-II)

Our faculty, researchers and fellows continue to push the boundaries of discovery, innovation, and societal impact in cutting-edge engineering and sciences with critical application to remote sensing technologies and Earth sciences, such as weather observations and forecasting, with ultimate impact on nation’s health and security, as well as contributing to US global leadership.

The Center’s research and training is incorporating use of AI and machine learning in processing observation data to produce products and provide forecasts, such as soil moisture, floods and sea surface temperature. Across the Center, uncrewed systems (UxS) are being developed to enhance observations and improve environmental forecasting and prediction of severe weather, droughts etc.

This quarter, several faculty and fellows have made scholarly contributions that have been recognized in leading peer-reviewed journals. Congratulations to Drs. Laura Alvarez, Hernan Moreno, Trent Biggs, and our talented fellows, Stephany Garcia and Jahnelle Howe, whose research spans critical topics from high-resolution soil moisture mapping to the health of mangrove canopies post-Hurricane Maria. Their research is not only advancing scientific understanding, but bridging the gap between research and real-world applications that benefit communities and ecosystems.

We also celebrate the outstanding achievements of our fellows. Leah Porras (UTEP) has been recognized as a Top 5 Winner at the UTEP GradExpo 2025 for her innovative use of machine learning in wildlife detection, exemplifying the caliber of research and creativity fostered at CESSRST-II.

Finally, CESSRST-II continues to support the professional growth of our fellows through hands-on NERTO experiences with one fellow already completing his NERTO, while eleven others will be involved in their NERTO internships during late Spring/ Summer 2025; they will all participate in summarizing their NERTO experiences in the NOAA Seminar Series later this Fall.

Student News Highlights

CESSRST Fellows' Publish New Research Articles

Cohort 1 Fellow and Alum, Jahnelle Howe published, “Assessing mangrove canopy height and health changes in Puerto Rico post-Hurricane Maria using remote-sensing techniques” in ESA Ecosphere.

Cohort 1 Fellow and Alum, Stephany Garcia and Dr. Trent Biggs published the paper, “Fluorescence-Based Indicators of Escherichia coli and Untreated Wastewater: Turbidity Correction and Comparison of In Situ and Benchtop Fluorometers in a Sewage-Polluted Urban River” in ACS (America Chemical Society) ES&T Water.

CESSRST Fellow recognized at Grad Expo 2025

CESSRST II Fellow Leah Porras has received recognition as a Top 5 Winner at the University of Texas at El Paso Grad Expo 2025. Leah’s award winning poster was titled ” Using Machine Learning to Detect Seals and Polar Bears in MultiSpectral Aerial Imagery” which utilizes annotated UV, IR and RGB imagery to develop a detection model that can identify polar bears and white coat seals in a multispectral imagery.

Leah is a CESSRST-II Cohort 3 Fellow studying Computer and Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso and is mentored by Dr. Miguel Velez Reyes and Dr. Erin Moreland (NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center)

NOAA Experiential Research and Training Opportunities (NERTO)

Cohort 3 Masters Fellow, Biajani Gonzalez completed his NERTO, while eleven (11) other Fellows began their NERTO internship this summer and will give a summary of their experience in the NOAA Seminar Series later this fall.
