We have 700 Thespy registrations to date. Troupe directors of qualifying students will receive a congratulatory email in the next couple of days to share with their students. This email contains information on how to register for the international round. Please encourage troupe directors to be on the lookout for this email. If you have questions about this please email Ginny (thespys@schooltheatre.org)
Adjudicators and Other Jobs
We're still seeking adjudicators for the Thespys - please pass that on to anyone who might wish to participate.
We're also looking for more folks to serve on the safety team, especially floor and dorm captains. Please apply if interested; email Brian with questions.
Expect the unexpected
We're excited about the new flow and format of the event at Indiana University, which incorporates the best bits of ITF's decades-long legacy with adjustments for the venue, health and safety, and the valuable lessons from two years of pandemic event planning. Please remind teachers to give themselves (and us) grace as they "relearn" how everything works. It's going to be amazing!
For those of you attending, don't forget to mark your calendar for our special chapter gathering Monday, June 20 at 5 p.m. We're excited to see you there!

CELEBRATING ASIAN/PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH
|
|
BACKGROUND: The roots of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month can be traced back to 1976, when Jeanie Jew, president of the Organization of Chinese American Women, contacted government officials in response to the lack of Asian Pacific representation in the U.S. bicentennial celebrations that same year. The observance began in 1979 as Asian Heritage Week, established by congressional proclamation. In May 1990, the holiday was expanded further when President George Bush signed a proclamation making it month-long for that year. On October 23, 1992, Bush signed legislation designating May of every year Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The month of May was chosen to commemorate two significant events in history: the immigration of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 (Golden Spike Day). STUDENT THEATRE MAKER SPOTLIGHT
|
|
Name: Callie Huff
Age: 15 (sophomore)
Location: Mt. Carmel High School,
San Diego, CA
Production: Little Shop of Horrors
Role: Puppet Designer and fabricator
How did you come up with your initial concept? What inspired you?
Huff: I was researching another high school’s production, their Twoey looked so different from the classic movie and broadway production! After talking with the director, we decided- why should our Twoey have to look like all the others? After a few initial sketches and fine tweaking, I spawned the creation that is our very own Audrey Two.
Were you a fan of Little Shop of Horrors before this process began?
Huff: Surprisingly, no. I hadn’t even heard of Little Shop when the director asked me about making the puppets. In fact, this is my first time working on a full-length show, ever! I’ve grown to really love this production.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
CALL TO ACTION
|
|
We need your help! AB 1718 calls for an appropriation of 1 Billion dollars for schools/LEAs to purchase instructional materials and provide professional learning in the arts and world languages.
It is common practice to support newly adopted standards and frameworks, with state funding, and we want to ensure that the committee knows the value and importance of this! Money to support curricula, materials, and professional learning in music education is absolutely essential for its continued growth.
Please complete this as soon as possible, as decisions are being made within the next ten days. You can also send an action alert letter once every 24 hours, if you feel so inclined. Feel free to share this link and opportunity with other arts and world languages teachers, as well as all advocates/parents.
NOTE: you might receive an error message after your attempt, if this occurs, please disregard as it means that you are not a constituent of that committee member. The challenge with the action alert is that we were not able to target the exact zip codes of our members to the varied members of the group. So - if you get an error message, please disregard, we still appreciate the attempt and if you don't receive one - it went through!

THE PROCESS OF CREATIVITY IN THE CLASSROOM
featured in
DRAMA TEACHER ACADEMY
|
|
Gai Jones shows you how to establish an environment of creative experimentation in the theatre classroom without the stress of performance.
This course is strictly process based. In order to honor the creative process and out-of-the-box thinking required, there is no final product, performance, or even assessment. Instead, the focus is placed on the student actor’s engagement. Their reflections and your observations are what drives positive learning.
This set of lessons includes Tips for the Theatre Educator, which are based on Gai's own theatre practice. Teaching scripts are also provided so you know exactly what to say to your students to facilitate their creative processes.

We are thrilled to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the hilarious and harrowing Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, arguably Edward Albee’s most famous and most vicious masterpiece.
