Women's History Month
Lesson Plans and Resources
|
|
March is Women’s History Month, a time to recognize, celebrate, honor, and encourage the study of the contributions and achievements of women throughout history and all over the world.
To help theatre teachers celebrate, CETA has compiled a list of resources to immerse your classrooms in honoring Women's History through lessons, sites, and instructional tools that not only celebrate women all over the world; but also women in the world of theatre.

EdTA’s 2023 board of directors’ election opened at the beginning of February and will run through mid-March. All EdTA adult members in good standing are eligible to vote — you have a voice in choosing who will represent you on the board.
Currently, the board of directors comprises nine elected members, including the president, vice president and immediate past president, and three appointed members (view current board). The vice president/president serves a five-year term, two as VP, two as president, and one as past president. Other elected members serve three-year terms and may be re-elected for a total service of six years. Appointed members serve one four-year term.
This year, a VP/president and two board directors will be elected for terms to begin July 1, and members will vote on proposed code changes.
Check the email sent at the end of January and make sure you vote by the deadline.

Lessons from Shakespeare's Classroom
by Robin Lithgow
|
|
This volume explores the relationship between the emphasis on performance in Elizabethan humanist education and the flourishing of literary brilliance around the turn of the sixteenth century.
This study asks us what lessons we can learn today from Shakespeare’s Latin grammar school. What were the cognitive benefits of an education so deeply rooted in what Demosthenes and Quintilian called "actio"―acting? Because of the vast difference between educational practice then and now, we have not often followed one essential thread: the focus on performance. This study examines the connections relevant to the education offered in schools today.
This book will be of great interest to teachers, scholars, and administrators in performing arts and education.

We lost a very special theatre teacher on February 8, 2023, when Arlene Hood lost a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. A champion of arts education, Arlene Hood served on the board of the California Educational Theatre Association since 2002, including two terms as President. She held a degree in Theatre Arts and a single-subject teaching credential in English. She taught theatre at Moreau Catholic High School since 1987.
Arlene also taught choir, musical theatre, stagecraft, Shakespeare, and public speaking at both secondary and college levels. Her students have received numerous awards and recognition for their exceptional achievements in theatre and music. Ms. Hood was also a freelance director in the Bay Area. Her educational and professional productions have been performed in Japan, Scotland, and Egypt. Her own professional development activities allowed her to study and perform in Cyprus, Italy, Jordan, and England. In her “spare” time, she enjoyed the company of her two dogs, growing a variety of vegetables, traveling, and playing poker.
Her life will be celebrated on April 15, 2023, in the Teves Theatre at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward.
