From the President

Huge congratulations to CFA’s newest breeds! At the February Board of Directors meeting, the Toybob was advanced from Miscellaneous to Provisional and the Lykoi was advanced to Championship. The breeders have worked very hard to achieve these milestones.

Congratulations is also extended to new and continuing Breed Council Secretaries.

CFA has no shortage of people who devote hours in order to serve CFA. So many dedicated and passionate people step up to the plate when called upon. That’s what makes CFA the great organization it is today. Every year, you have an opportunity to nominate a person for outstanding service that benefits and enhances the objectives of CFA, public outreach, rescue, fund-raising, donation of professional services, mentoring, and the promotion of health and welfare of all cats. This is your opportunity to recognize those individuals by nominating them for a STAR award. Nominations for Star Awards must be submitted to Cathy Dunham no later than February 28th, 2023 for consideration by the CFA Board.

Also, keep in mind if you are interested in serving CFA as a Director-at-Large, you will need to declare no later than March 15, 2023.

Remember to be helpful and kind to each other,

Our Featured Cat

Our featured cat for February is CFA's Ninth Best Cat in Premiership Regions 1-9, GP, NW NUDAWNZ MON AMOUR OF CECCHETTI, a ruddy Abyssinian neuter.

Requesting Star Award Nominations

The CFA Star award is intended to recognize individuals for outstanding service that benefits and enhances the objectives of CFA. It is impossible to list all the types of service that would merit consideration for this award, but may include any outstanding work benefiting CFA, public outreach, rescue, fund-raising, donation of professional services, mentoring, promotion of health and welfare of all cats, dedicated service, outstanding service in unique or emergency circumstances, behind-the-scenes support of CFA activities which may go unrecognized, special leadership of a significant CFA activity, or stand-out service that significantly promotes the objectives of CFA, are just some examples of service that may be recognized by a Star Award.

If you would like to nominate someone who has contributed in an important way to CFA, please email Cathy Dunham at cathy.dunham0@gmail.com (that is a zero after Dunham) with the following information, no later than February 28, 2023:

  1.  Name of nominee.
  2. Description of the nominee’s contribution(s). Remember that it needs to be a stand-out contribution, so feel welcome to be descriptive.
  3. The timeframe of the nominee’s contribution. When did he/she do this work?
  4. Your contact information in case the committee has questions.

The committee will review all submissions and submit potential recipients to the CFA Board for approval.

CFA Judges' Association

All people, including exhibitors, breeders, judges, clerks and show producing personnel need to know the CFA show rules.

Show rule 1.02 states It is the policy of CFA to penalize member clubs by suspension or expulsion for shows that exhibit a flagrant disregard of these show rules.

It is difficult to know every rule and can be challenging to read through all of them but a regular review of them is important for all people, especially CFA’s judges. It is a part of the job to assist clubs in maintaining fairness and adhering to the show rules.

There have been occurrences where the show committee has asked a judge to break the show rules, either knowingly or unknowingly. It is up to the judge to uphold the show rules. If the rules need to be adapted for a special circumstance, then the CFA board of directors need to be notified in advance so a resolution can be made.

Here is a link to a digital copy of the CFA show rules.

It is also possible to purchase a paper copy and it will be sent to you through the mail. This can be done through the CFA website. Look under Shop, Publications, then Manuals and Brochures.

The digital copy has a search feature to assist if you are looking for a specific topic or you can also use the index. There are sections specific for exhibitors and show production personnel.

Knowing and following the show rules can help to avoid penalties for clubs and provide a standardized experience for all shows.

CFA Top Ten Breeds of 2022

Breed population data is derived from the number of kittens that are fully registered, not the number of kittens claimed on a litter registration. Many breeders register their litters but leave it to pet owners to register the individual cats. To help keep these figures as accurate as possible, CFA highly recommends that all breeders manage the registration process for their pet clients. While many cats may LOOK like purebreds, the registration slip is the best proof that a feline companion is truly a pedigreed cat. Just as important, registration helps accurately depict what breed wins the annual popularity contest!

The top ten breeds of 2022 speak to the enduring popularity of breeds such as the Ragdoll and Maine Coon, but also includes a relative newcomer to the list!

  1. Ragdoll
  2. Maine Coon Cats
  3. Devon Rex.
  4. Exotic
  5. Persian
  6. British Shorthair
  7. Abyssinian.
  8. Scottish Fold
  9. Sphynx
  10. Siberian (which was ranked #15 in 2020*)

Although non-pedigree and non-standard Companion Cats are not an intentionally bred breed, their popularity is impressive. If ranked alongside our pedigree breeds, they would come in between 7th and 8th place with only a smidge more registered cats than Scottish Fold and Scottish Straights.

*It is important to note that the increase in Siberian registrations was not entirely due to an increase in Siberians kittens born. In order to accurately represent the true popularity of Siberians, a multi-year effort was championed by the Siberian breed council to encourage breeders to manage the registration of kittens in a way that depicts true data about the breed. That meant for many breeders, registering more of their kittens born themselves, instead of relying on the new owners to.

CFA Junior Fanciers

Sheri Shaffer, Chair

Junior Fanciers welcomes our new co-chair, Albert Sweitzer. Albert is also the North Atlantic Regional Coordinator, and has past experience working with young exhibitors in CFA and 4-H. He has bred Persians and has been active in showing his Household Pets to National Wins.

The Junior Program has rewritten their guidelines as of October 2022. All Juniors, ages up to 18 years of age, can participate in the program in several areas including: feline projects, feline husbandry, cat show production, exhibiting cats, and community service.

The Junior Program is currently focused on recruitment of Junior Fanciers in the 4-H community and hope to introduce these youth to the Cat Fanciers Association's show circuit and exhibiting cats. A special joint cat show is planned with a local 4-H Club in Pennsylvania for July 2023. There are already over ten Juniors who have signed up, with more to be recruited. In conjunction with the 4-H Club, the Junior Fanciers Program will be holding seminars on feline husbandry and grooming tips for the Juniors before the cat show is held.

We encourage anyone who is interested in our program to please reach out to co-chair, Sheri Shaffer at sherilyn.shaffer@pchas.org.

After a closure lasting months longer than originally intended, the Feline Historical Museum re-opened to visitors on Monday, February 13th. We greatly appreciate the patience of our supporters during the closure and look forward to welcoming visitors again. We’ll be open 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Our latest donation, from Lorraine Shelton, is a Pablo Picasso signed 1957 lithograph … what a piece of history! Thank you, Lorraine.

CFA BAP/BRP

Charlene Campbell, chair

CFA BAP-BRP would like to share snapshot in time of our ongoing updates on pending/potential, active and closed/inactive cases during the month. Many of you do not know about our good work because we are confidential, I thought I would share a generic glimpse.

Every donation you give to CFA BAP-BRP works hard, saves lives,100% goes to the feline care. THANK YOU, donations no matter how small or large it matters!!! We appreciate you!

I want to personally add a note: Breeding, raising and showing felines is expensive, especially veterinary care! In the US we have a shortage of veterinarians and the cost is climbing every year.  Showing and breeding felines is a hobby!

I see too many cases where the cats suffer and do not get vet care they need, because the breeder thought this was a way to make additional income and they ended up overwhelmed with unexpected feline illness or emergency. Some recent cases the cats had NEVER seen a veterinarian! The other problem that occurs often, is when breeder or spouse suddenly face a serious personal illness. It is difficult to juggle a long term illness and cattery needs. Breeders need to reach out right away for support and possible downsize or work to share breed until they are back to good health.

Please work to keep the number of feline(s) you can properly afford to feed, house, groom and provide proper veterinary care! To many felines in a cattery causes the felines suffer! It is easier to have a small healthy breeding program, than a large unhealthy program.

Cat Talk

Teresa Keiger, Editor

It's our annual breeding issue, and the Cat Talk writers have created some very informative articles!

Two articles focus on the importance between breeders and between breeders and their veterinarians. Another discusses the various reasons that breedings make not take. Several breeders wrote us with the reasons that they breed - and the answers might surprise you!

We also look at what you don't know about LaPerms, Egyptian cats in history, inherited blood clotting disorders, CFA's first clerking school in India AND our first show in Vietnam. And that's certainly not all!

(and remember - 65 days later we'll have our "Kitten" issue!)

What Does YOUR Cattery Name Mean?

in 2013, Cat Talk ran a series of articles exploring the stories behind breeders' cattery names. There were SO many great stories and some very clever names.

Well, it's been 10 years and new catteries have been registered in the meantime. Do you have an interesting story about your cattery name AND it was registered since 2014? We'd love to hear it! Please send it to Nancy Kerr at nakerr68@outlook.com. We can't wait to read your stories!

And don't forget: Cat Talk makes a great gift for friends near and far - or yourself! Order and gift a subscription at https://cfa.org/cattalk-almanac/

Texas Déjà Vu – 2021 Licensed Breeder Bills Repeated in 2023

Two 2021 Texas licensed breeder bills that would make participating in the legal hobby of pedigree cat breeding more difficult are seeing new life in 2023. Occasionally activists will refile legislation in future sessions if not initially successful. Such is the case with the 2023 House Bill 274 to reduce the breeder licensing threshold and HB 674 requiring breeder bill of sales.

Motivated by the 2020 Sunset Advisory Commission's recommendation to eliminate the Licensed Breeder Program, activists sought to preserve the program by increasing the number of licensees. Both HB 274 and its predecessor SB 323, would reduce the threshold to "5 or more adult intact female animals and is engaged in the business of breeding those animals for direct or indirect sale or for exchange in return for consideration." Currently, the numerical threshold is 11 adult intact females. House Bill 274 would also eliminate the transaction threshold of not fewer than 20 in a calendar year. Representative Vikki Goodwin (D-47, Austin) is the author of the 2023 HB 274.

House Bill 674, and its predecessor HB 3057, would require a licensed breeder to "provide to a purchaser a bill of sale for each animal sold or exchanged in return for consideration," with six requirements and record retention by the licensee.

Representative Barbara Gervin-Hawkins  (D-120, San Antonio) is the author of both HB 674 and HB 3057 which died in the Senate. However, the 2021 threshold bill authored by Senator Royce West (D-23, Dallas) was referred to Senate committee with no action.

The 88th Texas legislative session ends May 29, 2023. The provided bill links are for the individual bills' legislative information pages. As the session progresses, any new information will be added to these pages. A past session's progress is not predictive of how reintroduced bills will advance; however, the history may be helpful.

Tax Tips with George Eigenhauser

Experts believe that as many as 1/3 of taxpayers have some second source of income. This may include side hustles in the “gig economy” such as Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, or Airbnb. Many employers are hiring part-time employees, temporary employees, or independent contractors. Other income sources may include services provided for compensation; yard/garage sales; or sales on Amazon, Etsy, or Craigslist.

Any time you earn $600 or more from a source other than regular employment they should provide you with a 1099 form. However, the IRS warns that for income sources that do not provide 1099 forms, you are still responsible for keeping records and reporting the income to the IRS. Failure to do so could result in penalties and interest in addition to the taxes due. While the extra money may help family finances, failure to report this income may have serious tax consequences. For more information about “gig” income visit the website: https://www.irs.gov/businesses/gig-economy-tax-center  .

CFA Regional News

Region 2

Terri Zittel - Regional Secretary

Valley Cat Fanciers put on their first show on February 5, 2023 in Longview, WA (Region 2).

Nice one day six ring show with a Valentine theme. Only pitfall was that their entry clerk’s flight Was cancelled and Linda Ahrens had to arrange for someone else to bring up the show supplies, i.e. judges books, master clerk’s catalog, and the show catalogs. Wow! Good work Linda!

The highlight for us was the 2nd Veteran class of the show season. This is an event that Linda Osburn worked so hard to get accepted by CFA. It is a class for cats over the age of 7 years. The contestants were Earlywinters True Colors, a 14 year & 3 months old calico Persian and Tybetsaphire Calyx, a 7 year & 2 months old seal point male Siamese.

Such fun! Linda Osburn donated rosettes and prizes for two participants. (photo is of True Colors and Gary Veach)

Region 3

Traci Whittenberg, Regional Secretary

Region 3 got together for 2 fantastic shows! The Wichita Cat Fancy Show at the Cotillion in Wichita, Kansas and the 70th Anniversary, Houston Cat Club Charity Cat Show in Houston Texas. Both shows were great successes with plenty of exhibitors and many guests who came to see the beautiful cats in Region 3!

Region 5

Mike Shelton, Regional Director

It’s been a busy month in the Southwest Region! Things kicked off with Crown City’s “Boots and Bling” show in Ontario, CA. Along with club members, the judges got in the spirit of the western theme. This is Jennifer Reding during her premiership final.

Next up was the Cat Fanciers of Hawai’i show in Honolulu. The cat fancy in Hawai’i faces a lot of challenges, but there is a small, very dedicated group there determined to keep it going. They are one of the few areas in the world where counts are actually higher now than before the pandemic. This was Ellyn Honey’s last show to judge in Hawai’i, and the club had a nice going away cake for her.

Finally, the San Diego Cat Fanciers put on their show in Del Mar. This was their first show since pre-Covid, and they came back with a bang! There were huge numbers of spectators, particularly on Saturday when the line to get in the show stretched well outside the building for much of the day. The club went all out, including agility, their traditional Education Ring, and multiple rescues. Over 30 cats found their forever homes over the two days of the show.

These photos of the Education Ring and one of Vickie Nye’s finals give an idea of the attendance they had. You can also see Alain Lescart’s wonderful slide show here.

Region 7

Kenny Currle - Regional Director

Save the Date!

The CFA Southern Region will hold its awards celebration Saturday, June 10 at the Holiday Inn - Tanglewood in Roanoke VA. We're looking forward to celebrating our winning cats and people with everyone. Details to come and will be posted on the region's website as things are finalized. Southern Region exhibitors: get your cats' photos taken now so that you don't have to scramble at the last minute. And yes, everyone will have the opportunity to sponsor their favorite cat(s) wins!

Region 8

Takako Kojima, Regional Scretary

We had Regional Show on January 14, 2023 in Asakusa Tokyo with an American judge and five Japanese judges。Entry was pretty good 150! There were new unique vendors. An interesting product was for cats/dogs when new kitten need the owner’s help at the delivery. If baby was difficulty in breathing, owner can help it by using handy respirator. It’s not expensive and very useful for breeder! Someone bought 10 handy respirators.

Exhibitors enjoyed show so much. Judge Emiko Misugi worked as SH trainee in Annette Willson’s ring.

We had clerking school on January 28 at Sangyo Boeki Center Hamamatsucho, in Tokyo with nine participants. Lecturer was master clerk instructor Masayuki Okada, and assistant was master clerk Makiko Munemura. Special speaker was CFA Allbreed judge, Yaeko Takano. She spoked about judging program so that some people will be interested in becoming a judge after they become a clerk. We need new clerks for CFA shows, since the number of clerks have been decreasing year by year. I think we need to reconsider their job, part, and duty in the cat show again. I think at the show hall clerk is a most important part in the ring. Clerk can control everything in the ring if they did fine job with perfect knowledge of show rule. Fine clerks will be able to stop many troubles at the ring and will be able to have happy and fine shows. I hope there will be more many excellent clerks in the near future.

Next month, we will have clerking school again in Osaka so that we can get

more many new clerks in Kansai area.

Region 9

Pam DelaBar, Regional Director

Region 9 Europe is thrilled to have Olga Grebneva and Olga Korotonozhkina become CFA judges. Both of these ladies have been well known throughout our vast region for many years. They have supported CFA, and even have traveled over 32 hours from Kiev, Ukraine, in order to be able to judge our shows. Both are Star Award winners.

We are adding more and more shows to our calendar including such interesting locations as Bordeaux, plus our Region 9 show and awards banquet will be held in Bilbao, Spain. Please join us and have fun showing your cats.
