From the President

April 29 & 30, 2023, marked the conclusion of the CFA 2022 – 2023 show season. This past show season had some sense of returning to normalcy with the greatest number of shows licensed globally and cats entered over the past four years. The beautiful cats being shown and reconnecting with friends at CFA shows is on the right path. One might say, 2022 – 2023 was the “come back season.”

Congratulations to all the breeders and exhibitors that showed their cats in CFA. Your passion and love for the sport of showing cats is to be commended. Regardless of the final placement, award received, or if you were simply showing for experience, it is my hope you achieved your goals and you have many memories to share and enjoy.

Beginning May 1, 2023, CFA is offering a new club sponsorship program. The Infrequent Region/Area Judge Program offers $500 dollars to a club licensing a judge who has not been seen in the Region/Area in the last three show seasons. This program is experimental and limited to two awards per Region/Area and one award per club. Clubs in Region 9 have a separate program and are not included in this new program.

Back to the celebration of a great season, enjoy your National, Regional and Division Awards Banquets and as Prince would say… Party Like It’s 1999!

Wishing everyone great success and wonderful experiences in the 2023 – 2024 show season.

Cat Talk

Teresa Keiger, Editor

Thank you from Cat Talk!

The response to our April "Kitten Issue" has been great! Many thanks to those of your who expressed your appreciation, and to the hard-working volunteers of the Cat Talk staff!

Our Upcoming June Issue

The June issue of Cat Talk will be out in a few weeks. Its theme is "Groomed to PURR-fection." We've interviewed several professional cat groomers who gave us their perspectives not only about show grooming, but the importance of grooming ALL cats.

Good grooming isn't just for cats - we look at the dos and don'ts for people too. And just in time for the CFA Awards Banquet, readers share their banquet fashion faux pas (or when good outfits go bad). And speaking of outfits - where can you find great cat costumes, and how they can benefit your cat beyond the costume contest.

Oklahoma Updates on Bill of Rights and Breeder Reporting Bills

In Other News, North Dakota States Animals Are Not People

Oklahoma proponents of the Dog and Cat Bill of Rights experienced the same disappointment as their California counterparts when the Rules Committee failed to vote House Bill 1992 out of committee – or hold a vote on it. As reported in What's Hot March 2023, the bill would have required all animal control, animal shelters, and rescue groups to conspicuously post a copy of the Dog and Cat Bill of Rights. These rights ranged from being free from cruelty to the right to mental stimulation, sterilization to prevent unwanted litters, and veterinary care. Although the session doesn't officially end until May 26, 2023, the bill has missed the Deadline to be considered by the House as a whole.

Oklahoma SB 349/HB 2059 to repeal the annual reporting requirements in §30.11 of the Commercial Pet Breeders Act were amended as emergency bills, changing the effective date from 11/1/2023 to when passed and approved. HB 2059 was passed and approved on 4/21/2023.

In Other News….

North Dakota House Bill 1361, declared an emergency measure in Section 2, amends the definition of person in §1-01-49(8) to exclude artificial intelligence, animals, inanimate objects, and environmental elements. A closer look was necessary to determine why "animals" would be in a bill defining "Person." In general, there are varying definitions of "person" in different legal contexts that include both humans and non-human legal entities, public and private. The actions list of HB 1361 reveals extensive amendment of the original bill that removed a section to be added, "Personhood" expressly stating individuals' rights are "superior and not equal to" listed non-human categories. However, the amended bill, now enacted law, only added an exclusion from the existing "person" definition, "The term does not include environmental elements, artificial intelligence, an animal, or an inanimate object." North Dakota Can explains the rationale for this policy at https://ndcan.org/house-bill-1361

CFA Regional News

Seacoast Cat Club celebrated their annual show last weekend. The gate was excellent and the children's stuffed animal contest and the face painting were a great success

Kids loved the stuffed animal contests and the face painting.

Congratulations to first time show manager Tracy Roberts on a phenomenal job.

Residents from the local Veteran's Home. Their coordinator said they enjoyed past shows and have been anxiously awaiting this show. As they came thru the gate every one of them was beaming with anticipation, and they all left with words of praise and appreciation.

Region 2

Terri Zittel - Regional Secretary

The CFA National and Regional Wins are finalized! Many thanks to the fabulous CFA staff and especially to Shirley Michaud Dent for all their hard work!

Congratulations are in order for Noelle Giddings, Bobbi Irie, Wendy Tom and Victoria Hutchens Pitcher. Noelle showed and earned National Wins in Championship and Kitten class. Bobbi showed and earned National Wins in Championship and Kitten Class. Wendy Tom in HHP’s and Victoria in Premiership. As you all know we are the “Southeast Alaska” of the CFA cat fancy. It took a supreme effort to gain these wins with phenomenal cats.

Region 3

Traci Whittenberg, Regional Secretary

Region 3 celebrated April with the Texas in Bloom cat show, sponsored by the North Texas and Show and Tell Cat Clubs. The weather cooperated, the wildflowers were in bloom and the cats of Region 3 were able to strut their stuff in Belton, Texas

Region 5

Mike Shelton, Regional Director

The show season came to a rousing end in the southwest region at the Las Vegas Cat Club's show on April 29-30. Elvis was in the building each morning to introduce the judges, who were all dressed according to the theme of their individual rings, based on a various landmark Las Vegas hotels. The show also featured the club's usual fantastic raffle table, as we celebrated the end of another show season.

There was also a bittersweet aspect to the show, as Ellyn Honey's distinguished judging career came to a close. Thanks for everything, Ellyn, and we're sure we'll see you down the road.

Region 6

Candilee Jackson, Regional Secretary

The Midwest Region closed out the 2022-2023 show season with a rousing show hosted by the Luckytom Cat Club at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Illinois. This show friendly venue welcome a terrific and steady-flowing gate for the entire weekend. Show manager, Sueann Spinder stated: “We had a great count, especially in premiership and household pets. Our visitors loved the costume contest we held at lunch time on both days.” Sangamon Animal Control, a no-kill rescue in Springfield, had kitties for adoption. Cindy Willoughby, long-time volunteer for SAC, reported that four of the seven kitties were adopted, including the shelter’s longest resident. The SAC rescue/adoption numbers stand at 652 felines placed in loving homes.

Region 7

Kenny Currle - Regional Director

The 2022-2023 season ended on a high note at the New Vision Show in Plant City, FL. It was a fun and relaxed show with exhibitors celebrating the season's end and everyone's wins. PLUS: a series of Tik Tok videos the club posted from the show have been going viral!

The next weekend, the region kicked off the new season with Rebel Rousers/Ocicats International show in Lawrenceville, GA. Kudos to both clubs for producing such a great show!

Region 8

Yukiko Hayata, Regional Director

We had 2022~2023 third Regional show on April 22 in Tokyo. Fortunately, it was fine day and there were 175 entries. This was top number of entry as recent Regional show. We had three wonderful judges from America Larry Adkison, Russell Webb, Anne Mathis and Japanese judges Yukiko Hayata, Yaeko Takano and Wakako Nagayama.

The show hall was new and big. Exhibitors and staffs needed to walk hardly. It was a very nice exercise ! At the corner of show hall, there was Chanan Photography. Chanan took almost 100 cats in two days, on Saturday 64 cats at show hall on Sunday 30 cats at the rental photo studio.  Exhibitors were so happy since they have not had the chance to have photo sessions by Chanan for past over 6~ 7 years.

There were new many exhibitors with beautiful cats. I suppose they will attend show in the next show season.

I appreciate to all exhibitors, judges, clerks. stewards and also Richard and Nancy Katris. I appreciate your cooperation who came to photo session at the photo studio on Sunday again.

Region 9

The European show scene is already picking up for this current show season with clubs receiving return engagements for large pet fairs and new cooperative efforts with other major organizations. With no shows scheduled for the past weekend in Region 9, all attention is focused on 13 May telecast of the Eurovision Song Contest finals (you have to see it to believe it).

We have the last scheduled regional awards banquet on 4-5 November in magical Bilbao, Spain. The show is held in a large ballroom in the hotel and the banquet offerings include some of the best wines in Spain (or soft drinks if you are so inclined). You are cordially invited to attend and enjoy our Spanish hospitality plus cheer on our celebration of our awards winners.
