Refocus
September is a month of change and refocus. This weekend we observe Labor Day which is the “unofficial” end of summer. Most schools are back in session and the focus has shifted from summer activities and hot weather to school activities and milder temperatures. Autumn will not begin for a few more weeks, but change is occurring. The lush green of the trees will begin to change. Those who love gardening will turn their attention to planting fall vegetables. And of course, many of us will shift our focus to football games and homecoming activities.
What is the change or refocus that God has placed in your heart and mind? The passage in Romans 12 is helpful in embracing change and refocus of our walk with God. “Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. (The Message Bible, Italics added)
First, shift our focus on Jesus. If our attention has been placed elsewhere, now is a good time to refocus on the Lord. Second, recognize what the Holy Spirit is doing in our lives through the life-changing Word of truth. The Holy Spirit will lead us and guide us into all truth. Finally, let’s not be only hearers of the Word, but be doers of the Word. As the passage states, God is bringing out the best in us! The result will be lives that bring glory to God’s name and be the salt and light to the world.

"Retirement Poem"
For 30 years God has allowed me to work at Occidental and IAT Insurance Group, and God alone provided the strength for me to make it each and every day.
So now l have more time to shop until l drop, no more punching the morning clock. l can lay in the bed, do what l want to do, because there is no boss to answer to.
I will continue to rejoice and give God the praise for this wonderful milestone in my life. As l press forward to see what He has in store for the next chapter of my life.
"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." Matthew 6:34

Historical Glance at HBCU's | |
WEEK ONE: The Establishment of HBCUs
Historically Black Colleges and Universities emerged after the Civil War to provide Black Americans access to post-secondary education. Prior to the Civil War, the education of Black Americans was prohibited in the south and discouraged in the north, resulting in the existence of only a handful of schools for Black students like Cheyney University in Pennsylvania. Cheyney was established in 1837 and the first HBCU in the county.
