Greetings! Here's your monthly guide to what's happening at CFCC.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Cape Fear Community College
Greetings from Jim Morton - CFCC President
Dear Sea Devil Community,

This past month, we hosted three special enrollment events in Pender County, in addition to the scheduled virtual One-Stop Enrollment events; we held our very first—and successful—drive-in commencement ceremony for our fall 2019, spring 2020, and summer 2020 graduates; we gathered for a service day at New Hanover High School; and graduated two Workforce Development training courses. It has been a busy and rewarding time.

Although the pandemic continues to shadow our community and Hurricane Isaias threatened us early last week, Cape Fear Community College is stronger than ever and remains steadfast in its mission of providing high-quality, affordable education and workforce development opportunities to our local community. We encourage you to rely on us even more as we face new challenges and adapt to new lifestyles. During tough times, CFCC stands out even more as an affordable resource for those who want top-notch training—from an associate degree or learning a new trade to getting assistance with running your small business during difficult times. We truly have something for everyone!

Go Sea Devils!
Jim Morton, CFCC President

CFCC Drive-In Graduation Ceremony A Success
August 7, 2020
On Friday, Aug. 7, we hosted a drive-in commencement ceremony for our fall 2019, spring 2020, and summer 2020 graduates at the CFCC North Campus.

Out of respect for the safety of our graduates and their families and a desire to celebrate these resilient graduates, we opted to host a drive-in ceremony where graduates had the opportunity to cross the stage to receive their credentials while their guests watched and cheered/honked them on from their vehicles.

We are so happy to have celebrated our graduates in this special way. We believe this social media comment below from an attendee describes the sentiment:

Congratulations to the Class of 2020 for your GRIT!!! Amazing accomplishment despite numerous hurdles! You are all so inspiring! BRAVO & WELL DONE to Cape Fear Community College for being a Class Act today with an incredible Graduation Ceremony!! When so many things have been canceled, you saw the possibility and opportunity to create something unique! Thank you for your humble and dedicated service to your students and community. We are proud to forever be a Cape Fear Sea Devil Family! #CFCCGrad #CapeFearWomensSoccer #WellDONE #BestGraduationCeremonyEver

Truck Driver Training Graduation
August 7, 2020

CFCC celebrated 19 truck driver training graduates who successfully obtained their CDL license and CFCC truck driver training certificate! So proud of these grads!! 🚛 🙌

Grad Highlight: Arthur Morgan
While working for a non-profit in Baltimore, Maryland driving box trucks with a Class B license, Morgan decided to utilize the additional time during the pandemic to pursue his Class A CDL and a truck driver training certificate from CFCC. Motivated by the trade’s perpetual job opportunities and flexibility and the program’s reputation and affordability, Morgan was confident in his investment and through the program’s evening class was able to manage a day job and class in the evening. For just under $500 and less than ten weeks time, Morgan was able to successfully learn how to maneuver a 53-ft tractor-trailer and obtain his Class A CDL. “The first week, you’re like a scared child behind the wheel of a 53-ft tractor-trailer,” said Morgan. “Then, once you graduate, your head’s big now and you’re a confident, grown man!”

CFCC's truck driving program, now housed in the Continuing Education division of the College, costs just under $500! The next Truck Driver Training class begins Sept. 3.

CFCC Grads Dazzle And Amaze!
This CFCC Grad in her 60s inspires!

"I went to CFCC to be an example for my children and grandchildren and encourage them to get their education. I wanted to show them if I can do it in my 60s, they can do it too. After I started CFCC, my daughter and four grandchildren followed. I want to thank Cape Fear, the faculty and staff, and even my fellow students who encouraged me to finish and set an example to my children and grandchildren."

CFCC art instructor and portrait artist Sharon Wozniak Spencer recently took part in the Art Fields Festival in Lake City, South Carolina with her piece "The Embrace."

This painting has a touching story behind it. Spencer had been working with The Hope Center, a day shelter, in Wilmington, and befriended two volunteers at the shelter. After convincing the woman and her husband to be the subject of her painting, Spencer learned the couple had also struggled with homelessness. Read more about this story here.
