Greetings! Here's your monthly guide to what's happening at CFCC.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Cape Fear Community College
Greetings from Jim Morton - CFCC President
Dear Sea Devil Community,

Happy New Year! Cape Fear Community College begins its spring term today and we are all hard at work helping students with last-minute questions as classes begin. Nationwide, community college enrollment is down, but we expect our enrollment numbers to be strong comparatively. Please encourage those who might be interested in enrolling at CFCC to visit CFCC.EDU for more information.

Like all of you, I am hopeful that the pandemic will soon be behind us. Although things are not back to normal at CFCC yet, we have certainly learned a great deal, and we are prepared for what lies ahead. This past year showed us how strong we can be, and taught us that we can adapt and excel through the unexpected.

Cape Fear Community College is continually propelled forward by our mission to serve the citizens of New Hanover and Pender counties. The collapse of some sectors of the economy over the last year will require many people to reinvent their careers and rethink future plans. As always, we are ready to serve our community by providing high-quality, affordable choices for our students and a dynamic, well-trained workforce to support area employers. The challenges of the past year remind us how very fortunate we are to be able to offer transformative educational opportunities. We hope this year will be much better for us all.

Thanks to all of you for your support. I look forward to all we will accomplish together in 2021.

Sincerely,
Jim Morton, CFCC President

Thank You: Wilma Supports CFCC Students
Each year, as part of WILMA's Women to Watch Awards, Wilma Magazine gives stipends to four local students to support their writing efforts. Students are nominated by officials with their school's writing programs. This year two students from CFCC and two students from UNCW each received $500 in assistance.

Congrats to these outstanding CFCC students:
Megan Erne
Megan is currently attending Pender Early College High School and is pursuing her associate degree in arts at CFCC, with plans to graduate in May 2021. After graduation, Erne will transfer to a university to obtain her Master's in English.
Sarah Rhue
Sarah recently received an associate in arts degree from CFCC. Visual arts and creative writing often intertwine themselves in her projects. Art, history, and nature are primary influences in her work and she is currently writing a historical fiction book series.
Sea Devil Artists Collaborate On Project
We are proud of our talented Sea Devils! Recently, these Drawing 1 (Art 131) students designed a collaborative final project based on the concepts of jazz, that draws upon discovered parallels in their personal life experiences. The title of this piece is Hope and Despair, charcoal with collage, 2020, and is on display at the Student Center at CFCC's Surf City Center.

CFCC Student Spotlight
Terrence, Truck Driver Training Student at CFCC:

For over 20 years, Terrence dreamt of obtaining his commercial driver’s license (CDL). Now, twenty years and seven kids later, his dream came true.

Terrence fell in love with truck driving at age 21 while employed as a driver’s helper. Terrence’s colleague nudged him to give driving a try. And although at first intimidated at the prospect of driving a 24-foot box-truck, Terrence’s mind was set his first time behind the wheel. Terrence recalled, "I fell in love with it and I told my wife that was what I was going to do; I was going to become a truck driver."

Despite Terrence’s determination to obtain his CDL, his dream didn’t happen as quickly as he had hoped. Each time he focused on earning his CDL, his family grew. Over the years, the need to provide for his growing family had Terrence working in the military; for the fire department; and as a roofer—where a roof collapsed beneath him, broke his pelvis, back, arm, and hand. His injuries were so severe that he had to learn to walk again. But always, in the back of Terrence’s mind, was the desire to be a licensed truck driver.

Terrence, now 40 years old, discovered CFCC’s new short-term truck driver training program where he could earn his CDL in less than a year – at a fraction of the cost of other truck driving schools. He graduated from the program in November 2020 and in less than a month has had three job offers.

"It was a dream come true for me. I was in the process of giving up. I feel like I have a career now. This career will help me take care of my family financially. There are different opportunities I have now where I can have time with my wife and kids."

Phil, Sustainability Technologies Student:

I hold a bachelor's degree in Business from ECU and received a great education from East Carolina, but didn't really know what I wanted to do. Business can be applied to pretty much any industry and as I looked at where jobs were growing, I saw that sustainability and renewable energy were experiencing big growth here in the US. During my research, I found Cape Fear Community College. I live here in town and thought this would be a great opportunity, so I decided to pursue it.

Program Highlights:
The teachers really care and give us great educational scenarios. In my weatherization class, these scenarios can be directly applied to real-life processes, such as weatherization, installation work, electrician stuff.

Quality and Value:
Tuition is a great value and the ability to get the classes that I need will ensure I get a well-rounded education.

Great Opportunites:
I have just secured a part-time internship position at a local energy company, Above and Beyond Energy, where I'll be doing part-time air sealing.

Way to go, Phil! 👍 Learn more about CFCC's Sustainability Technologies program here.
Tools for Techs Giveaway
In December, CFCC students participated in the annual "Tools for Techs" giveaway from the Downeast chapter of the NC Transportation Maintenance Council.

Each year, tools are donated by local businesses to equip students for the workforce. All of the donations were solicited locally by our diesel instructors. Students were judged by a panel in a list of categories including grades, attendance, recommendations from their employers, personal recommendations, and essay. Six CFCC students won prizes. Way to go, Sea Devils!

A big THANK YOU to the NC Transportation Maintenance Council and to the employers who donated prizes, including Triple T, Gregory Poole, Nash Equipment Co., Smithfields, the James Sprunt Foundation, and the Patrick Freeland Foundation.

Wilson Center Collaborates with Wilmington Ballet Company to Stream Nutcracker
December 15, 2020

The Wilson Center worked with the Wilmington Ballet Company to bring this famous ballet online. Featuring a cast with varying abilities - from professionals to children, the scenes were filmed separately, keeping everyone apart, with part of the costuming incorporating masks and face shields to ensure safety.

“It feels wonderful because I get to finally dance again,” said the group’s youngest dancer, Adyllyn Lankos, “And express my feelings to the audience.”
