Greetings! Here's your monthly guide to what's happening at CFCC.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Cape Fear Community College
Greetings from Jim Morton - CFCC President
Dear Sea Devil Community,

Our fall semester is off to a great start. Enrollment is up; students are attending classes on-campus and online. It is so nice to have students in either format! To celebrate, we had a first week of school welcome-to-campus event with banners and greetings from PTK and student leaders, who greeted students with gift bags packed with CFCC swag and candy.

I'd like to thank our students for being mindful of our mask and social distancing policies and our faculty, who are doing a stellar job providing instruction and support in-person and online. Thanks to our academic advisors, librarians, tutors, and IT support specialists who work continuously to assist students virtually and in-person. Thank you to our housekeeping staff, who work hard keeping our campus clean and sanitized.

On the academic front, we have some new great new programs I'd like to share:
  • Health and Fitness Science began this fall semester with its first class at capacity. Instructor Allison Nye has done a great job setting up the fitness center to provide a safe and motivational learning environment. You'll see more below in this email.
  • Public Safety Administration kicked off this fall with instructor Justin Ovaska, Program Director, Criminal Justice Technology & Public Safety Administration. The program is focused on providing administrative and leadership skills for students who are entering or already working in the public safety sector. Justin spoke about this program saying "There is an emphasis in our society to develop and produce diverse well-educated leaders in public safety, so I am excited that CFCC is offering this program. Students that enter the program may receive credit if they have prior training in several public safety categories such as law enforcement, corrections, juvenile justice, emergency medical services, 911 telecommunication, and others. This program is for anyone who is interested in gaining valuable knowledge and skills to become a leader in the public safety workforce."
  • Associate In Teacher Preparation is an affordable start for those seeking a four-year degree in education. With assistance from their advisors, students connect with their chosen transfer institution so they can be aware of transfer requirements.

I'm convinced you can't find a better school than CFCC, and I'm excited to announce that we are ranked #5 in the state by bestvalueschools.org. We're glad people are choosing CFCC, where we offer the best education at a great price at one of the most beautiful campuses around. Check out this 360° downtown campus tour and visit in-person anytime.

My best to everyone as we embark on our new semester!

Go Sea Devils!
Jim Morton, CFCC President
Here's a look at happenings from the past month...
CFCC LPN Program Ranked Best in the State
For the fourth consecutive year, PracticalNursing.org ranked CFCC's Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program first among 38 LPN programs in North Carolina. Scores and rankings for each school were determined based on a historical analysis of National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) exam pass rates and test scores.

“We are proud to be recognized by PracticalNursing.org for the accomplishments of our practical nursing program. CFCC has an outstanding nursing faculty whose focus is on quality education and student success. The honor of being recognized as the #1 practical nursing program in North Carolina and the continued success of our students exemplifies CFCC’s commitment to preparing graduates to meet the health care needs of our community.”

In-Service 2020
August 18, 2020
We held our annual CFCC employee In-Service event with a day of online workshops and professional development opportunities for our faculty and staff. From faculty tools to broaden online instruction to tips and techniques for delivering excellent customer service and student success, it was a rewarding experience for all, preparing everyone for the fall semester.

Thank you to our amazing team who made this all possible!
And the Winners Are...
August 18, 2020
We are so proud of our team and one of our favorite things is to recognize their excellence and reward it. Here are some of our most recent rockstars.
Congratulations to Marilyn Goodman Anderson Excellence in Teaching Award Winner Holly Walters!
Holly Walters brings life and relatability to her biology lectures. Here's what a few of her students had to say:

“This instructor has a way of teaching that feels almost like a narrative. She does not speak about the subject matter in abstract terms, she makes the subject relatable and real and speaks about anatomy and physiology in a way that is compelling.”
------------
“She teaches a hard subject that many pre-health field students see as being a major hurdle, but she makes the class fun. She kindly and thoughtfully answers all questions and learns EVERY STUDENT'S name in the first week."

Way to go, Holly!
Congratulations to CFCC's 2020 President's Award Winners:
Craig Metty and Maria Rodriguez!
Kind words about Craig:
"Craig is always so courteous and kind and a pure JOY to be around. He does great work for the college and is receptive to everyone’s needs."

"Craig speaks to everyone on a level that makes them feel that he genuinely cares not only about the workday, but about them as an individual. His level of professionalism and customer service is remarkable."
Kudos to Maria:
"Maria has a particular zeal for her profession that not only positively impacts students, colleagues, and college as a whole, but also our community. She expanded CFCC’s reach into the community by building a relationship with New Hanover Regional Medical Center for work-based learning for her program."

"In addition to all her hard work at the college, Maria volunteers in the community, involving CFCC students."
Congratulations, Craig and Maria!
Congrats to CFCC's milestone recipients. Here's to many more years!

Congratulations Morgan Piper - Ann Penton Longley Endowed Scholarship Recipient
Hey Cape Fear! I’m Morgan Piper, currently a class of 2021 CFCC ADN student. I’ve been so blessed to receive the Ann Penton Longley Endowed Scholarship for $1250 this Fall semester.

Working as a Licensed Practical Nurse during a pandemic and continuing through the ADN program has not made nursing school an easy feat.

This scholarship has been a sweet surprise for this chaotic year! No amount of thanks or praise will amount to how honored I am to receive this gracious gift. I can only hope our paths may cross with a big embrace someday soon!
CFCC Partners with YWCA on Training Initiative
We'd like to congratulate our friends at the YWCA on receiving the Google.org Digital Skills Training Grant! They will receive $20,000/year over three years to implement STRIVE, a comprehensive training and support program designed to increase access to digital skills for women and the underserved community. This program will help those who need it so much, including survivors of domestic violence, citizens returning to society after incarceration, and low-wage workers.

We are proud that CFCC is one of three community colleges to partner with YWCA on this program, which kicks off in October.

“We’re going to rely on the area’s community colleges to do the job training because nobody does it better. We will supply the counseling and wrap-around services.” —YWCA Lower Cape Fear CEO Velva Jenkins

WilmingtonBiz: CFCC Small Business Center - COVID-19 Tips for Small Business Owners
Businesses enduring this age of COVID-19 have much to think about as the end of the year approaches. From strategies to reduce tax liability to meeting the requirements for loan forgiveness from Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans, there are many things to wade through. One expert stresses that properly done applications, organization, and good record-keeping are crucial.

Our own expert, Jerry Coleman wants to help local small businesses prepare for the road ahead.
CFCC's Small Business Center Director, Jerry Coleman (pictured here), stresses the importance of planning for the future. "Nobody has written the book on this particular kind of economic downturn. There is new ground every day," says Coleman.

Now, with only a few months left in the calendar year, Coleman says small businesses must assess the impacts the pandemic has had on them and to develop plans to take them through the end of the year. "They should ask themselves what are they doing to be innovative and to bring business in and be aware of the latest legislation."

We encourage our local small business owners to seek help via our Reboot, Recover, Rebuild (R3) program.
