A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Cape Fear Community College
Greetings from Jim Morton - CFCC President
Dear Sea Devil Community,

I hope everyone had a fantastic Independence Day! It's hard to believe we are more than halfway through July.

It's been a wonderful summer at Cape Fear Community College. We've had great enrollment numbers for our summer sessions and we are busy preparing for our summer commencement on August 6. Our fall registration numbers are also very strong. Many course sections are full, and our faculty and staff are working hard to create capacity for our students. Our new Advertising and Graphic Design program is proving to be a very popular choice. Our programs are reaching more people and offering more flexibility than ever, and our students continue to inspire us with their achievements.

There has never been a better time to enroll at CFCC. Covid-related federal and state grant funding is available to help most students—whether they want to train for a career or get started on a four-year degree. We have never had this much funding to pass along to students, and we are excited about the educational possibilities these extra funds will create for students enrolling this fall.

CFCC has also received tremendous federal and community support this summer. We received a $3.9+ million Department of Labor Grant - the largest grant award in CFCC's history. The Pathway Home grant will allow CFCC to assist incarcerated and recently incarcerated individuals with training and support services to help them lead productive lives once released.

We also announced an exciting expansion project at the Wilson Center, spearheaded by generous donors Henry and Roya Weyerhaeuser.

Great things are happening at CFCC every day. I appreciate your support as we help our students make their dreams a reality.

Go Sea Devils!
Jim Morton, CFCC President

The Pathway Home Project: CFCC Awarded Largest Grant in College History
CFCC has been awarded $3.9+ million from the U.S. Department of Labor to provide educational services for area prisoners and those recently released from incarceration. The Pathway Home Project, the largest grant in CFCC history, will serve approximately 400 participants as they transition from incarceration to productive citizenship.
“We want to meet students wherever they are and help them take the next positive step. We are so grateful to have been awarded this grant because this program will help members of our community make positive changes that will impact their families and our entire community when they are released. This project will help stop the cycle of recidivism in the Cape Fear region.”

CFCC Announces Wilson Center Expansion
Pictured from left to right: CFCC President Jim Morton, Roya and Henry Weyerhaeuser, and CFCC Vice President of Advancement and the Arts Shane Fernando
Thank You, Henry and Roya Weyerhaeuser, for your major gift to support the Wilson Center Expansion!
We are thrilled to announce our exciting expansion to the Wilson Center! We made the formal announcement at a special event held Tuesday, June 22, with local dignitaries, college officials, supporters of the Wilson Center, and local media in attendance. There were featured comments by Jim Morton, CFCC President, and Shane Fernando, Vice President of Advancement and the Arts. Fernando announced our lead donors – Henry and Roya Weyerhaeuser – and their generous gift of $500,000 to initiate the expansion project.

“Since the Wilson Center opened its doors to the community more than five years ago, we have welcomed hundreds of thousands of guests for Broadway productions, concerts, dance, comedy, commencements, and numerous other events,” said Shane Fernando, who has helmed the performing arts center since prior to its opening. “We are excited about this new expansion, and how it will allow us to move forward with both our educational and artistic missions. We are tremendously grateful to Henry and Roya Weyerhaeuser for their continued support of Cape Fear Community College’s Wilson Center.”

CFCC PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
NEW: Drone Systems Certificate
We're excited about our new program launching this August! Students will learn to build and repair their own unmanned aircraft.

“Businesses and organizations worldwide are investing in and relying on unmanned aircraft systems to carry out day-to-day operations,” said CFCC Dean of Career and Technical Education Mark Council. “As these systems become more complex and more expensive to replace, there will be a greater need to repair them.”

This two-semester certificate program will take place at the Cape Fear Community College North Campus in Castle Hayne. The curriculum will include Circuit Analysis and Fabrication Techniques followed by Intro to UAS Operations, Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Troubleshooting, and Small UAS Certification.

New Welding Course Opportunities!
We're excited to announce we've launched late-night welding courses and a welding apprenticeship program this August to help meet the growing demand for welders.

CFCC offers morning, afternoon, and evening welding courses Monday through Friday. “These classes are always full,” said CFCC Dean of Career and Technical Education Mark Council. The newly added third shift welding classes will run from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday. “Now, with morning, afternoon, evening, and late-night classes, anyone who is underemployed and wants to move up to a lucrative career in welding can take classes that fit their schedule.”

“Although this schedule is a bit unorthodox, we want to make a career in the rewarding welding trade possible for everyone interested,” said CFCC President Jim Morton. “Our welding courses are very popular, and the demand is there from employers in the Cape Fear region and beyond. These late-night classes will be a good fit for potential students who work during the day.”

CFCC Student Spotlight: Amanda Cobb
CFCC Firefighter Academy Graduate Finds Her Calling as a First Responder

On June 3, 2021, 12 students graduated from CFCC’s Firefighter Academy. Among the graduates was Amanda Cobb, a public safety officer on Bald Head Island.

Cobb grew up in Alaska and earned a degree in art from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, but she felt like something was missing and she wanted more discipline.

The tragic loss of her younger brother took Amanda on a life journey to the coast of North Carolina where she embarked on a career in law enforcement with Bald Head Island's Department of Public Safety. Here she was encouraged to expand her certifications by attending CFCC's Firefighter Academy.

After obtaining her EMT certification at CFCC, Cobb will be able to fully serve the Bald Head Island community. “Don’t be afraid to continue your education," says Cobb. “Any additional training you can take, do it. Every little bit of training will help.”

CFCC Landscaping Department Goes Homegrown
CFCC's Landscape Gardening program teaches students landscaping, horticulture, gardening, pest management, and the operation of horticulture businesses. Each spring, the students host a plant sale to build funds for program testing fees, but in 2020, this could not happen due to COVID-19.

When CFCC Landscaping Coordinator Scot Shutters heard this news, he devised a plan where the landscaping needs of the college could be met while the students made money for the program fees. Scot gave a list of the plants he needed to program director Ken Wells and asked if he could provide the types of plants as well as the numbers needed. Ken and his students accepted the challenge.

Fast forward to spring 2021—the grounds of CFCC campuses are alive with color from Kong Coleus, Mexican Petunias, Sweet Potato Vine, Ruhellia, Persian Shields, and more - all homegrown from CFCC Landscape Gardening students! Thanks for bringing beauty to our campuses and to all who made this happen!!

The Wilson Center Awarded $10,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts
We're pleased to announce this grant that will support a production and community dance residency of the Invertigo Dance Theatre during the 2022-2023 season. The Wilson Center project is among one of 1,100 projects across America totaling nearly $27 million that were selected during this second round of Grants for Arts Projects fiscal year 2021 funding.

“As the country and the arts sector begin to imagine returning to a post-pandemic world, the National Endowment for the Arts is proud to announce funding that will help arts organizations such as the Wilson Center to reengage fully with partners and audiences,” said NEA Acting Chairman Ann Eilers. “Although the arts have sustained many setbacks during the pandemic, the chance to gather with one another and share arts experiences is its own necessity and pleasure.”

The Wilson Center looks forward to bringing the work of the Invertigo Dance Theatre to the Wilmington community and the surrounding areas. Invertigo Dance Theatre will perform “Formulae and Fairy Tales,” a repertory piece about the life of Alan Turing, a mathematician and World War II codebreaker. Most audiences will know the story of Alan Turning by the 2014 film, “The Imitation Game,” that won the Academy Award for Best Adaptive Screenplay. Residency activities include a host of community events in and around Wilmington such as an arts and science programming with youth, dance workshops for the community, as well as classes with students from Cape Fear Community College and the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
