A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Cape Fear Community College
Greetings from Jim Morton - CFCC President
Dear Sea Devil Community,
Fall is an exciting time at Cape Fear Community College. It is wonderful to see students, faculty, and staff in the hallways and on our campuses. Each member of our campus community is dedicated to creating an environment where students seek and find success.
This past month, I invited faculty and staff to meet with me for "Chats with the President" to discuss their experiences and share their ideas. I have enjoyed our conversations during each of these informal meetings. The feedback from everyone has been valuable and constructive. I plan to continue this initiative, and I look forward to the next round of talks. My goal, as always, is to make Cape Fear Community College the best place for our students to learn and our employees to work.
We've had another successful month with fundraising and grant awards. The North Carolina Education Lottery awarded a $5,000 Education and Outreach Grant to CFCC's Human Services Technology program and our Fine Arts program received a $7,500 grant from the North Carolina Arts Council. These funds will go a long way to provide training, awareness campaigns, and materials for our students. These awards reflect the dedication of our faculty and staff. I appreciate their efforts in pursuing these grants to help enhance our programming.
Many thanks to our students, faculty, staff, donors, and community for your continuous support of CFCC and its programs. Your help allows us to continue to provide opportunities for citizens in our region to achieve their educational goals. I am grateful for the dedication of the entire Cape Fear family.

We are proud to announce our inclusion in the Best Practical Nursing Programs in North Carolina by PracticalNursing.org. For five years, CFCC’s Practical Nursing program has consistently made the Top 10 list among 39 other practical nursing programs in the state.
“We are proud to be recognized by PracticalNursing.org for the accomplishments of our practical nursing program. CFCC has outstanding nursing faculty whose focus is on quality education and student success,” said CFCC Dean of Health and Human Sciences Dr. Mary Ellen Naylor. “The honor of being recognized in the top 10 practical nursing programs in North Carolina and the continued success of our students exemplify CFCC’s commitment to preparing graduates to meet the health care needs of our community.”

CFCC Human Services Technology Awarded $5,000 Education and Outreach Grant
This grant, from the North Carolina Problem Gambling Program (NCPGP), is designed to help colleges promote problem gambling education and outreach to students, faculty, and staff. The program follows a three-pronged approach focusing on screening for problem gambling, outreach programs, and policy changes to include a campus-wide policy on gambling.
“I am proud of Dr. LaTonya Niang, program director, and the Human Services Technology program for their commitment to educating and counseling our students about addiction. Many people may not be aware that a gambling addiction can be as destructive as drugs or alcohol,” said Dean of Health Sciences Dr. Mary Ellen Naylor. “Outreach is essential to raising awareness about the seriousness of this addiction.”

CFCC to Host Wilmington City Council and Mayoral Candidate Forums
Cape Fear Community College’s Department of Social and Behavioral Science and Student Political Science Club is pleased to present Wilmington City Council and Mayoral Candidate Forums on Thursday, Oct. 21, from 6:30 – 9:00 pm. The event will be held at the CFCC Wilmington Campus in the Union Station auditorium (U-170).
“This event is a great opportunity to ask questions and learn about each candidate and their priorities,” said CFCC President Jim Morton. “We are proud to host these important forums, and we hope to have many community members in attendance.”
The forum is open to the public, free of charge, and will be moderated by WECT’s Jon Evans.
“Local politics affect our daily lives,” said CFCC’s Thomas Massey, department chair of social and behavioral science. “Policies can impact the cost of housing, the success of business ventures, the long-term infrastructure of the City of Wilmington, and our environment. We invite the public to come out and listen to mayoral and city council candidate visions for the future of our city.”
