Greetings! Here's your monthly guide to what's happening at CFCC.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Cape Fear Community College
Greetings from Jim Morton - CFCC President
Dear Sea Devil Community,

On Friday, May 14, we held a commencement ceremony for our Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 graduates. The weather was absolutely beautiful as we honored these graduates at our North Campus in Castle Hayne. Handing students their diplomas and sending them off into the next chapter of their lives is one of the most rewarding experiences I have at CFCC. I wish our grads the best and encourage them to keep in touch and share their successes with us. We can't wait to see what they accomplish.
I want to thank our incredible students, faculty, and staff for making Spring 2021 a positive and productive term. You did an outstanding job during a challenging time!

As we move ahead into the summer months, many students are enrolling in summer classes at CFCC. Our 8-week session begins Monday, June 7, and the 5-week session begins June 30. Summer classes can be found here. In addition, our new summer short-term classes have just been announced. There is truly something for everyone in our Economic and Workforce Development summer course catalog. Students can train for an essential career, grow their professional toolkits, or take a personal enrichment class just for fun.

We're also busy enrolling students for the Fall 2021 term. Our initial enrollment numbers look strong, and I again want to acknowledge the hard work of CFCC's incredible faculty and staff. We have experienced healthy enrollment numbers during the past year, when the majority of our peers – nationwide - have been struggling. I am so proud of all we're accomplishing and of the tenacity and dedication of our entire team.

Cape Fear Community College's success reflects the tremendous support we receive from our community. Together, we are making a long-lasting impact in the Cape Fear region.

Go Sea Devils!
Jim Morton, CFCC President

Inside Higher Ed: CFCC Goes Viral on TikTok
Recently, InsideHigherEd reached out to us to do a feature on our TikTok efforts and we couldn't be more proud!

CFCC is creating quite a stir, attracting thousands of followers on TikTok since July 2020. When times got tough last year during the height of COVID-19, CFCC's Community Relations team began creating videos to encourage and engage students and clear up negative misconceptions and stigma about community college. The response was incredible.

As of this newsletter, CFCC's TikTok account has 16.5K followers and 691.8K likes and has enhanced all our digital channels. Most importantly, we're reaching and communicating with more people about the benefits of attending community college. Check out our TikTok account here.

CFCC Music Students Meet Musical Challenge
The pandemic and online learning have created challenges for our students, but these four music students took the difficult situation and made it an opportunity to challenge themselves and grow! Marc Siegel, CFCC Music Instructor, tested the group with a challenging guitar quartet to perform as a group when they had yet to even meet one another! What an inspiring and beautiful performance. CFCC Partners With Habitat for Humanity
Our Carpentry and Construction Management Technology students worked with Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity to build playhouses for the organization's Playhouse Project.

Habitat for Humanity’s Playhouse Project is part of an ongoing effort to find unique ways to bring new groups together around the issue of affordable housing. CFCC Carpentry and Construction Management Technology students are prebuilding playhouses in preparation for Habitat for Humanity’s one-day event where sponsors will bring a team to construct and decorate the playhouses for local children in need.

“Students building these playhouses are not only improving their skills, but they are also impacting lives of children and families in our community. I am sure each of the students involved will never forget this project. This is an ideal partnership.”

CFCC Student Spotlight 🌟 Marine Technology
Kaitlyn Bellas
Flashback to her senior year of high school, Kaitlyn Bellas was torn between pursuing a four-year degree in marine biology from a university and a two-year degree in marine technology from Cape Fear Community College.

The summer after her senior year, while working at a dive shop, Bellas was struck by the reputation CFCC’s Marine Technology program had amongst her coworkers and friends, many of whom were pursuing four-year degrees in marine biology.

She decided to take a leap of faith and enroll in the Marine Technology program at CFCC. Now, hindsight 20-20, Bellas wouldn’t have her time at Cape Fear any other way:
“My experience in this program has been awesome. All the instructors are amazing. I like that it has been small; you really get one-on-one time with your instructors. And being able to take the boats out and go on the research vessel and use all the different types of instrumentation is really cool, it’s what makes this program unique.”

After her May graduation, Bellas will go to work as a Dredge Field Engineer with Weeks Marine. In her new role, Bellas will be able to practically apply all she learned at CFCC in her daily work—from the instrumentation used, surveys, and dredges to data processing. 🌊🌊🌊🌊

Jeb Sylvia
Growing up with a love for fishing, Sylvia landed at Cape Fear’s Marine Technology program. “It made sense to me for its accessibility and affordability. Also, the job outlook of students that come from Cape Fear’s Marine Technology program was much higher than other schools. It seemed like a prosperous route to go and I knew there would be plenty of job opportunities after graduation.”

While initially interested in the fisheries aspect of the marine technology program, Sylvia developed a greater interest in surveying and the hands-on work with the program’s equipment and technologies.

“The amount of hands-on time we get learning about the software, hardware, and different systems is far beyond what I expected originally,” said Sylvia. “I feel I’m much more prepared now than I ever would have been before to enter this workforce. The instructors did a really good job of giving individual students time with the equipment to feel prepared and go out ahead of the competition.”

Pender Early High School Essay Contest: The Importance of Global Fluency
Pictured from left to right: Gisselle Bautista-Remigio, Morgan Beatty, Keira Jones, Taylor Borders, Lillian Rousey, Abigail Treto, and Alyssa Caison
Congratulations to all the Pender Early High School students who participated in the CFCC International Center's first essay contest! Students were asked to write about the importance of Global Fluency in their future education and careers.

“For my entire life, I have lived in the small town of Burgaw, North Carolina: a rural city that is home to fields of blueberries and woods that serve as a shelter for cardinals and deer. Yes, I cherish my home; but it is not one of vast diversity. When I “grow up,” I plan to become a secondary school teacher. If I were to ever leave the familiar roads of my home, I would also be leaving the comfort of its culture. I would need the ability to understand and adapt to people of different cultural backgrounds to ensure that I can be a competent and respectful teacher for my future students.”
— First-place winner Abigail Treto, an 11th grade student at PECHS

CCURE: Research Experience for University Transfer Students
Kudos to CFCC English Instructor John Metzger for Leading the UNCW Community College Undergraduate Research Experience (CCURE) Initiative for CFCC this Spring!

The Community College Undergraduate Research Experience (CCURE) is a new initiative at UNCW that is intended to open pathways to undergraduate research for community college students prior to transferring to a 4-year institution.

"UNCW's CCURE initiative is providing a wonderful chance for CFCC students to engage in the type of research that students might receive at four-year schools," said Metzger. "My experience this semester has confirmed when we present students with these kinds of opportunities, they absolutely thrive and shine. I am very proud of the six CFCC students who participated in this class, as it has provided them with a 'leg up' on their peers and will help to set the foundation for future research in their respective areas."

Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am, featuring the massive hits “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought her a second Grammy.

The six-times platinum album spent more than two and a half years on the album chart. Etheridge is also an Oscar winner for Best Original Song in 2007.
