Greetings! Here's your monthly guide to what's happening at CFCC.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Cape Fear Community College
Dear Members of the Sea Devil and Cape Fear Communities,

As Wilmington and the entire country react to the death of George Floyd and the racial inequities that exist throughout the nation, Cape Fear Community College wants to assure our students and campus community that we believe in equity and justice. CFCC condemns racism, bigotry, and the unfair treatment of minority populations. Whether these injustices are occurring in cities across the nation or in our own backyard, it is vital for us to have tough conversations, to examine and challenge our own beliefs, to educate ourselves, and to take an active role in promoting equality and denouncing racism.

Cape Fear Community College's mission is one of inclusivity and support for our entire community through the power of education. We strive to foster an environment in which our students and employees can learn from one another by providing a safe place for meaningful discussion, growth, and community. CFCC believes that education has the power to create positive change. Our students enroll here because they believe that advancing their education will create better opportunities for them in the future. Faculty and staff are here because they know our programs can broaden students' worldview and increase their career options. Now, perhaps more than ever, we must promote education and its transformative power. We must give space to new ideas and listen carefully and respectfully to viewpoints that challenge our own.

We believe the qualities uniting us are far more common than those that threaten to tear us apart, but we must recognize that racial inequity exists and work together to create the peace we all desire.
Jim Morton, CFCC President
On May 15, we honored 771 spring graduates from 841 programs and 551 fall graduates from 618 programs — 1,322 students who are going to go out and do great things in our community and the world. We couldn't be more proud! If there is a word for 2020, you could say it's persevere, and that's what our grads did, first enduring Hurricane Florence in 2018 and now the COVID-19 pandemic. Congrats to the Class of 2020 for finishing strong during unprecedented times! Read more below to see how we are celebrating our graduates.
CFCC Celebrates 2020 Grads in Creative Ways
Again, congrats to our awesome grads! Below are some creative ways we celebrated your special moment!

Social Media:
We highlighted our grads on social media throughout the month of May. Graduates shared their stories and selfies to celebrate their achievements. Several instructors also reached out to us recognizing outstanding graduates. The response was overwhelming!

We asked Cape Fear alumni, parents, friends, instructors, and staff to leave notes on a personalized tribute wall dedicated to CFCC graduates. The goal was to create a light-hearted virtual yearbook, full of uplifting messages, advice, photos, videos, and memes that encourage graduates and commemorate their important milestones. The board can be printed and shared.

Signs and Billboards:
We congratulated our Class of 2020 with signs around town and near all our campuses and also on local digital billboards.
Back to Campus: CFCC Plans For Face-to-Face Instruction This Fall
We're excited to announce that CFCC will be holding most classes in-person this fall. Students who wish to study online still have a large variety of classes to choose from.

CFCC President Jim Morton recently spoke with WWAY about CFCC's fall plans...
“Many of our classes require very specific training that is hands-on. We are working now to implement changes that will allow for social distancing so that students can safely get the training they need. The health and safety of our campus community continues to be our top priority. The extra measures we are implementing now are designed with everyone’s well-being in mind.”
—CFCC President Jim Morton

Student Services is currently available for in-person assistance and students are encouraged to come to any CFCC location for help with admissions and financial aid.

Your health and safety come first ...
CFCC is implementing measures for social distancing, providing personal protective equipment, and frequently disinfecting our instructional spaces.

CFCC relies on guidance from local and state agencies for COVID-19 safety procedures. Stay updated by visiting cfcc.edu/coronavirus.
The Wilson Center: We Miss Your Glow!
The wonderful thing about the performing arts is that they bring people together. We can't wait for the day when we can all gather again to enjoy the wonderful performances at the Wilson Center.

Shane Fernando, Interim Vice President of Advancement and the Arts, recently spoke with the StarNews about the current status of reopening the highly acclaimed performance venue.

“Our business is community, bringing people together. That pushes us to the end of the line for reopening. No one wants to go back until it’s safe,” says Fernando. This means it will be summer or later before our area sees a full return of events such as movies, concerts, plays, performances, and art shows.

At this time, the Wilson Center does not have a definite reopening date. Touring is down and broadway tours and concerts are not possible financially with capacity at 40-50 percent.

When performances do begin again, things will be a bit different. "It’s going to be a little more structured. Masks and hand sanitizer could be required and concessions might be ordered ahead and brought to your seat,” predicts Fernando. He does predict that by the time summer is in full swing, that most venues will be opening back up in a limited capacity.

Shane Fernando is a member of a task force advising N.C. Governor Roy Cooper on the best ways to reopen everything from performance venues to outdoor festivals.

The Visiting Year: Planning For Your College Student's Success During COVID-19
CFCC President Jim Morton shares his insight about making the best of a tough situation with your college student during COVID-19.

Many parents are concerned about sending their students back to their university in the fall with so many unknowns. Some are concerned about paying university sized tuition for classes that may be online. An option to consider during this unusual time is the visiting year , which gives college students the chance to pay less for classes and stay on track for graduation while staying close to home.

Parents need to know that Despite the pending uncertainty of the coronavirus and the effects it has had—and will have—on students’ college plans for fall, CFCC offers an affordable, convenient way for students to start their four-year degree and stay on track at their home college or university in a way that’s safe, dependable, and close to home.

Congrats to Cathy Burwell & CFCC Library: 2020 Will Eisner Graphic Novel Grant Recipient
May 27, 2020
The Will Eisner Graphic Novel Grants for Libraries consists of three annual grants given in two categories. This year, Cathy Burwell's program was one of two library programs selected to receive the Will Eisner Graphic Novel Growth Grant that provides support to a library that would like to expand its existing graphic novel services/programs.

Get BiblioGRAPHIC with CFCC will be expanded by the grant to include librarian led discussions, partner displays and activities with local public libraries, rotating collections of graphic novels to classrooms, and author and illustrator visits to the early college high schools in the area.

Congrats to Cathy and the CFCC Learning Resource Center!
