Holmes Jr. High Takes 2nd and 5th in Iowa Science Olympiad
|
Holmes Junior High grabbed both the 2nd place trophy and a 5th place finish in the Iowa Science Olympiad. The contest was held at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This was only the second time in its 18-year history that the Holmes Science Club has entered two teams in the Olympiad.
The Science Olympiad consists of 23 science events ranging from pencil and paper tests about subjects such as Rocks and Minerals and the Solar System to events where teams have to build devices like a gravity powered Roller Coaster or an electric Battery Buggy. Perennial powerhouse,
Ames, took the first place again this year and will go on to nationals. Mount Vernon took third. The second place finish was the best mark ever posted by the Holmes Jr. High Science Club.
It took a total team effort to realize 2nd place in the state. The A team medaled in 12 of the 23 events, with gold medals coming in Hovercraft
(Simon Plassman, Akshat Mehta)
, Ecology (Kimi Du, Jefferson Roberts), Fast Facts (Kevin Yang, Ethan Hughes), Solar System (Zoe Edgington, Kevin Yang), and Battery Buggy (Ethan Hughes, Simon Plassman). The team
added Silver medals in Anatomy (Kimi Du, Bhoomika Shettigar), Meteorology (Malvika Khadiya, Tanvi Khadiya), Optics (Emma Sliwinski, Zoe Edgingtion), and Thermodynamics (Zoe Edgington, Emma Sliwinski). We took the Bronze in Experimental Design (Zoe Edgington, Emma Sliwinski, Hari Surnedi), Microbe Mission (Ethan Hughes, Akshat Mehta), and Dynamic Planet (Hari Surnedi, Simon Plassman). The B team took the gold in Potions and Poisons (Brendan Moody, Charli Petersen), the Silver in Microbe Mission (Brendan Moody, Anurag Anugu), and Bronze medals in Optics (Charli Petersen, Anastasia Davidson) and Rocks and Minerals (Mira Keeran, Nathan Smith).
The Holmes Science Club teacher-coaches are Rob Welter, Amanda Johnson, Logan Mork and Jim Duff. The past two years the team has also enjoyed the energy and know-how of parent-coach Barry Plassman. The team was also aided by the advice and expertise of University of Northern Iowa professor of Health and Wellness, Dr. Susan Roberts-Dobie, professor of Physics, Dr. Jeff Morgan, and Holmes Industrial Technology teacher Ryan Weiss. Words cannot adequately express the team's gratitude to these individuals for their contributions to this effort.

CFPD Gifts Books to Kindergarten Students
|
Target Corp. has again awarded the Cedar Falls Police Department with a grant which is used to sustain an annual reading program.
With the grant, the Cedar Falls Police Department purchased a book for every kindergarten student in the Cedar Falls School District.
A Cedar Falls Police officer visited each kindergarten class and read the book to the students. More than 500 kindergarten students are served annually by this reading program.
The Cedar Falls Police Department uses this as an opportunity to team up with Target and the school system to educate and to provide a positive experience for students while spending time with police officers.
The grant is part of Target's Community Giving Grants Program, which has a goal to strengthen families and communities.

When scheduling your medical provider visits keep in mind that the Meningococcal Vaccine, specifically A/C/Y/W vaccine, is REQUIRED for all incoming students entering 7th and 12th grades for the 2018-2019 school year. Students must have the vaccine prior to the first day of school to attend and will not be permitted to attend until the vaccine is received.
Incoming 7th graders have an additional requirement of a Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap) vaccine booster. Contact your student's health office if you have questions.
End of the school year medication pick-up:
Parents plan to stop by the Health Office to pick up your students unused medications at the end of the school year; prescription and over-the-counter medications. Our goal is to avoid destroying expensive medications that you have provided for your student.
