Bimonthly Newsletter of Chicago CFMA

August 2017
It's hard to believe, I saw the high school band practicing in the school parking lot on my way home last week.  This is always the first sign to me that summer is coming to a close, and the kids are turning their attention back to the classroom.

The same can be said for our chapter as we get ready for our last social event of the summer and turn our energy back to our educational events.

It was nice to see the interns at the Summer Social this past month. We wish them well as they head back to school, hope they enjoyed their introduction to the world of construction finance, and find their way back to this great industry.

This was the 10th year for our Intern Program, providing scholarships for a total of 53 interns!  Our
program has served as a blueprint for other chapters and organizations looking to start a similar program; an accomplishment of which this chapter should be very proud.   This success would not happen without YOU - from the volunteers who give their time to provide positive experiences for both the interns and the host companies, to the volunteers that plan the golf outing, to the golfers (good and bad) that show up for a day of fun to support the cause.

I look forward to seeing you at the outing as we return to Bowes Creek in Elgin again this year. With an earlier shotgun start this should allow everyone to get home for those back to school meetings and to do lists.  The golf outing historically sells out and we are on track to do the same this year.  If you are planning to attend, I encourage you to sign up soon!  More information, including a registration link are included in this newsletter.

Our Midwest Regional Committee has been busy preparing to kick-off our educational season with what appears to be the best conference to date, with a great line-up of topics and speakers.  A 1/2 day course on best practices for documentation to preserve your claims and reduce your risks has been added to the agenda.  Attendees may choose to attend the 1/2 day course, the full-day conference, or both!

Final thought for the day, as throughout the year I have encouraged you to consider doing one more, whether that was coming to one more event, joining one more committee or moving into a more demanding leadership role, I have another idea for you to consider.  Think about one of your peers and how their "one mores" can be recognized.  Please start thinking about any of your peers who have gone above and beyond for our chapter and start making notes, so come January, you are ready to nominate them for one of our Build Chicago Awards.

Moving Forward with the Cloud: It's No Longer If, But When
By: Dom Pernai, President, Cornerstone Solutions

In today's world, there's absolutely no denying the captivating hold that cloud-based technology has on nearly every facet of our society. It's expanded far beyond personal use - originally used as an instant way to store and share photos, documents and digital mementos - and has become a true mainstay in business operations. In fact, a survey titled, "Diving into Cloud Services," conducted by Spiceworks, the professional network for IT, found that approximately 93% of organizations had already begun using a cloud-based service in some capacity by early 2016.  This statistic has only continued to rise exponentially over the past year, with unparalleled growth in terms of product advancement and depth of market penetration.

For the construction and real estate industries, this upward trend has proven to be no different. Read the full article here.
