Letter from the President

I hope those of you who were able to attend the Midwest Regional Conference came away with some new knowledge and connections.  We welcomed 135 participants from Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois to this year's conference.  A huge thank you goes out to the conference co-chairs, Chris VanTassel and Bill Reidinger, along with their committee, for the hours of work that went into organizing a well-rounded educational offering.  I would also like to thank our subject matter experts who so graciously gave their time to provide the breakout sessions, the exhibitors who keep us on the forefront with their solutions, CFMA's Principal Partners BKD and Viewpoint for their sponsorship, and to Pam Hepburn, CFMA Treasurer, for keeping us up to speed on what is new at CFMA on the national level.  The conference is the result of a partnership between seven CFMA chapters.  This collaboration expands access to resources, speakers, and improves our overall member experience.

Building off this momentum, we will continue to focus on collaborative partnerships for remainder of the year.  Each of our upcoming monthly programs feature a partnership with another industry association.
  • October 16: Using Tomorrow's Technology Today - in partnership with ASA Chicago
  • November 13: Economic Update Breakfast - in partnership with Illinois Road and Transportation Builders Association
  • December 4: Navigating Document Retention - in partnership with the Illinois Plumbing Council
We are thrilled to offer our members these enhanced networking opportunities; while showcasing CFMA Chicago throughout the industry.

The programming year will come to a close December 18th with the Annual Holiday Social at Empire in Naperville.  The Holiday Social is one of our premier networking events; one you do not want to miss!

Speaking of what you are missing.  Did you know CFMA is running a 12+ membership campaign?  If you are considering CFMA membership, join now and your membership will be active through March 2021!  Current members, this is your opportunity to share the benefits of CFMA with one of your colleagues.  Consider inviting someone to one of the upcoming programs so they may experience CFMA first hand.

Collaboration by definition means being an active member of a group that works together to achieve a common goal.  I invite and encourage each of you, as active members, to not only participate in meetings and events, but to also consider how you may contribute to CFMA.  Interested in joining a committee? Have an idea for a topic or program speaker?  Unsure where your time would be best spent, or need more information? E-mail us at infochicago@cfma.org and we'll help you make an informed decision.  We are continually looking for partners like you to shape the future activities of CFMA Chicago!

A construction company needs a document retention policy to maintain a profitable business. Some laws vary from state to state, and not all documents require the same treatment. A retention program provides your organization direction on how long records and information should be maintained, retained, and how to dispose of the record when the retention period has been reached.

This program will cover:
1) Overview of a formal document retention and destruction policy
2) Construction specific topics to consider
3) Risks of not following such a policy
4) Issues with dealing with paper AND electronic documents
5) Electronic solutions.
