CFOV Scholarships Awarded

The 2020 CFOV scholarship application period concluded just weeks prior to the Coronavirus shutdown!  This fortunate timing allowed the selection process to continue with minimal adjustments.  Thanks to the flexibility and cooperation of everyone involved (selection teams, school counselors, administration and faculty -to name a few), CFOV's scholarship funds awarded over $450,000 to the support post-secondary journeys of area students!

The 2020 scholarship featured the launch of the Smaltz Family Scholarship, a new scholarship fund for the benefit of Weir High School students, and the expansion of the EQT Scholarship.  Demand for scholarship support remains high as the application volume increased 18% over 2019 figures.

CFOV scholarship recipients are attending colleges and universities across the country.  In fact, 47 different institutions will have CFOV scholarship recipients on their campuses!

Here's a few expressions of thanks received from this year's recipients:

I would like to thank you for the amazing opportunities that have been granted to me because of this scholarship.  These amazing opportunities would be impossible without the generosity of this scholarship.  This scholarship has given me the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level in cross country and track.  I am currently working on training to get back into competition shape after recovering from injury.  I also have had the opportunity to take many interesting classes such as cellular biology, bio-organic chemistry and human origins.  Despite the challenges of being forced to do online classes due to the COVID-19 outbreak, I have excelled in my studies and am very excited for my final two years at school.  None of this would be possible without the generosity of this scholarship.  Once again I would like to thank you for granting me the ability to attend Oberlin College.
Sam Wehr - Oberlin College, Barnesville High School Class of 1979 Scholarship for Academic Excellence

I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my essay.  I am truly blessed and honored to be chosen as one of the individuals that will receive this scholarship.  It is an amazing feeling knowing that I can accomplish anything and complete my EMT course and feel proud of myself.  I will also be going on to accomplish my surgical technology degree.  With these I can make a difference in someone's life.  Thank you for believing in a small-town single mom, who wants to show her kids and the world that she has a meaning on this earth.  I will do my best to make everyone proud.
Kaylene Lee - Belmont College, Richard R. Heagin Memorial Scholarship

I am incredibly honored to be chosen as a recipient of the Frank Ferguson Memorial Scholarship.  Although I did not get to meet Mr. Ferguson personally, I have heard nothing but the best about him.  My favorite teacher at Brooke High School, Mrs. Giesmann, was mentored by Mr. Ferguson when she first began teaching.  His impeccable love for science impacted Mrs. Giesmann, and in turn, made me have the same exact love for chemistry.  Mr. Ferguson's teaching has impacted me in a way I would never have imagined possible.  After taking honors and AP chemistry, I have decided to major in biochemistry this fall.  Thank you so much for this opportunity and may Frank Ferguson's legacy live on for years to come.
Rachel Kazmirski - Frank Ferguson Memorial Scholarship, Brooke High School, Marietta College

I give my fullest gratitude in making the scholarship I have received possible.  Prior to receiving this scholarship, I was having some nerves due to my wondering of how I was going to pay for tuition, housing and fees, but after getting this award I was put in a comfortable position to where I no longer have to worry.  Again, I thank you all very much for making this scholarship possible, and I especially thank the fund holders and donors for giving money to make this award possible.
Piper Gaines - Magnolia High School, Joseph M. and Annale R. Wells Scholarship, West Virginia University

I would like to thank you for choosing me to receive the Joy Cox Nursing Memorial Scholarship.  I was honored when I found out I was selected and I am deeply appreciative of your support.  This means so much to me because it helps me pursue my career goal to become a nurse.  This scholarship also gives me the opportunity to achieve my lifelong goals.  This scholarship also helps my parents pay for my college tuition, which I am deeply grateful for.  I will make sure to value this scholarship and do my very best while attending West Virginia University.  Your generosity will motivate me to not only be the best student, but the best version of myself that I can be.
Jessica Angius - Wheeling Park High School, Joy Cox Nursing Memorial Scholarship, West Virginia University

There's no mistaking that scholarships play a critical role in the higher education of our area's young people.  CFOV is proud to work with donors who have identified higher education as an area of interest!  With 70 scholarship funds, and counting, we appreciate supporting such an important part of a young person's life!

Applications for the 2021 scholarship season will be available in December.

Emergency Impact Fund Grants

The fund, created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, provides flexible operating grants to support organizations working through new challenges, with preference extended to nonprofits supporting basic human needs. Future preferences will be identified as needs evolve and grants will be awarded as long as funding exists.

Emergency Impact Fund grantees are continuing to perform critical work across CFOV's eight-county service area despite the increasing strain on resources of all types.

The Emergency Impact Fund represents both - a true product of support for the community from the community when times are tough.
