Cleaner Planet Soap Nuts

Take your laundry to a whole new cleaning level with Cleaner Planet's organic, antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and compostable soap nuts! The shells of the soap nut contain a natural soap, called saponin. When the nutshells absorb water, the saponin is released, which creates a soaping effect. Saponin is 100% natural and biodegradable, making it an excellent alternative to chemical detergents.

BIONANO House Cleaners

The secret to unmatched cleaning and degreasing performance is in the size and the action of its component molecules. BIONANO products have extremely small (colloidal) molecules called nanoparticles, which are so tiny and so active that they can penetrate the much larger oil and grease molecules. Jusu Life Inc.

We love this line so much we use it to clean the store! Made in Canada, Jusu makes natural aromatherapy products from renewable sources and ingredients purchased using fair trade practices. Their amazing products are blended with pure therapeutic grade essential oils for their great disinfecting properties, as well as their many health benefits, and of course because they smell fantastic! 

Eco-Pioneer

Eco-Pioneer washing products are 100% pure and non-hazardous to the environment. These products are simple, effective, and sustainably sourced from Canadian suppliers. We love that these products are packaged in 100% recycled paper fibre boxes, reusable/recyclable glass bottles, and printed with non-toxic vegetable inks.

Eco-Pioneer offers four pure washing powders and a vinegar concentrate with endless cleaning possibilities. Their website is a great source of simple, effective cleaning recipes using their simple products.

Nellie's All-Natural

Simple, honest products. Every dryer ball, fragrance stick and laundry nugget is free of irritating toxins and phosphates, creating a hypoallergenic experience. Not only is Nellie's a local-ish company (Vancouver), their items are effective and biodegradable, helping to keep the environment as spotless as your clothes.

Plastic Free

We have an awesome selection of durable Sayula brushes to tackle any task. Made in Mexico, their products are biodegradable and use plant species that naturally grow in the region, don’t require much water or use of harmful practices, like the use of pesticides and fertilizers. They work directly with rural communities to help them improve their quality of life by providing stable income and fair prices that directly benefit people in these communities.

Citric Acid for Cleaning

Did you know that citric acid is excellent for cleaning? Because citric acid kills bacteria, mold, and mildew, it's great for general disinfecting and cleaning. It's also effective at removing soap scum, hard water stains, calcium deposits, lime, and rust. Also, it serves as a preservative in many cleaning solutions. Because lemon juice contains 5 - 8% citric acid, it's often used in green cleaning.

Citric acid is used in several cleaning products, such as auto cleaning products (e.g., wheel and radiator cleaners), metal cleaners, oven cleaners, dishwasher cleaners, all-purpose cleaners, soap-scum removers, bathroom cleaners, tub & tile cleaners, carpet cleaners, dish soaps, laundry detergents, air fresheners, window cleaners, stain removers, and dishwasher rinse aids. Read on to learn more.

All-Purpose Citrus Cleaner

Don't just compost those orange (and lemon) peels! Use them to make a super effective yet inexpensive cleaning solution. Simply keep the peels in a big jar and top with white vinegar. Once your jar is filled with peels, let it hang out for at least 2 weeks in a cool, dark place. 

When you're ready to use it, strain out the peels and discard. Dilute one part of the orange vinegar with 2 parts water for an outstanding all-purpose cleaner that can tackle just about any surface - even your oven!

Cinco de Mayo

More popularly celebrated in the United States and Canada than in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has become the celebration of Mexican culture. Traditionally, the day commemorates the Mexican Army's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The victory of the smaller Mexican force against a larger French force was a boost to morale for the Mexicans.

We love food, and we love Mexican food. If you're celebrating this year, here are a couple more recipes we know you'll enjoy.

Fresh Mango Salsa

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with this simple, colorful, and easy to make mango salsa! It's sweet, spicy, and absolutely delicious. Serve this fresh salsa with chips, on tacos or salads, or as a salad itself. It's that good. Recipe yields about 3 cups salsa.

Ingredients:

• 3 ripe mangos, diced 
• 1 medium red bell pepper, chopped
• ½ cup chopped red onion
• ¼ cup packed fresh cilantro leaves, chopped
• 1 jalapeño, seeded and minced
• 1 large lime, juiced (about ¼ cup lime juice)
• ⅛ to ¼ teaspoon salt, to taste

Instructions:

In a serving bowl, combine the prepared mango, bell pepper, onion, cilantro and jalapeño. Drizzle with the juice of one lime and mix well. Season to taste with salt. For best flavour, let the salsa rest for 10 minutes or longer. 

Canadian Maple Margarita

A perfectly Canadian twist on a tropical classic, this margarita trades the triple sec for some Canadian whiskey and adds maple syrup for a hint of sweetness. This recipe is from our friends at Edible Vancouver Island.

Ingredients:

4 oz tequila

2 oz rye whiskey

4 oz fresh squeezed lime juice

2 oz maple syrup

coarse sea salt or kosher salt and a lime wedge for rims of glasses

Method:

Slide lime wedge around tops of 2 margarita or cocktail glasses and then press into a plate of coarse salt. Set aside.

In a small cup, mix together whiskey and maple syrup until smooth. 

Add ice to a cocktail shaker, then pour in tequila, lime and maple whiskey mixture. Add lid and shake until ice cold.

Pour through strainer into cocktail glasses, garnish with extra wedges or wheels of lime and enjoy!

These wondrous creatures carry and nurture us, birth and raise us, love and protect us. Her work is never done, and it is done with love and selflessness. So show Mom some appreciation! Shop the Bulk Bins

Don't forget - you can find all of our most popular bulk goods (like rolled oats, sunflower seeds, buckwheat groats, black beans, short grain brown rice, and more) in bulk bins down the Produce Aisle! You can now also find bulk bagged goods down our Grocery Aisle.

All the jars on the floor are sanitized and ready to fill (except the Weck jars), or you can bring in your own containers to fill. Place an order for bulk quantities of your favourite items in a size you need. A quantity of 10lbs or more (per item) will give you a coop price: under 10lbs will be the regular bulk price.

The Return of Bulk Nuts

Our amazing Marisa is working on re-installing the bulk bins in our Nut Cooler! A few have already been installed, and over the next few weeks you can enjoy all the bulk nuts once again, including organic walnuts, pumpkin seeds, hazelnuts, pecans, raw almonds, unpasteurized almonds, cashews and cashew pieces!

Bulk Cleaning Products

Place a bulk order for some of the best, multifunctional natural cleaners out there - baking soda or citric acid! When you've finished cleaning the house, you can also add baking soda to your bath with some Epsom salts for a healing, relaxing soak.

Baking soda is great for scrubbing the shower, cleaning bathroom and kitchen drains, using as an all purpose scrubber, cutting through kitchen grease, cleaning your oven, mopping tile and wax free flooring, adding as a laundry booster, eliminating trash can smells, refreshing carpet and upholstery, and deodorizing stinky shoes.

Citric acid will deep-clean your coffee pot, clean your toilet bowl, de-gunk the dishwasher, and remove soap scum, hard water stains, calcium deposits, lime, and rust. Because citric acid kills bacteria, some fungi, and mildew, it's great for general sanitizing, disinfecting, and cleaning.

Making a Cup of Traditional Chai with Shanti Chai & Co

Ahhh… chai. Soothing and rich and sweetly spiced. The senses come alive, as aromatic cardamom brightens the room and earthy cinnamon and cloves ground the body. Chai is one of those things that instantly brings back feelings and memories. For me, it is of little cups of chai from my childhood, overly sweetened because it was a way we could sneak sugar. It is the feeling of independence from early travels on the other side of the world, the expansion of confidence and of growing excitement about life.

Our Original Chai Blend was created as an homage to these early cups of chai enjoyed in my youth. It was created over many nights spent tasting and testing, blending and brewing until just the right balance of whole spices was paired with the perfect CTC (crush tear curl) style loose leaf Assam tea. Then the recipe was finessed until we knew it would produce the same thing every time: a perfect cup of chai.

Recipe for 1 cup of Shanti Chai & Co's Original Chai Blend:

1.    Boil ½ cup water with 1 teaspoon Original Chai Blend SPICES.

2.    Add 2 teaspoons sugar and ½ cup milk (or milk substitute) and boil again.

3.    Turn heat to low and add 1 teaspoon TEA.

4.    Remove from heat and steep 3-5 minutes.

5.    Strain and serve, sip and enjoy!

Tip #1: While traditional chai is made with heavy milk and plenty of sugar, you can play around with both of these – try vegan option using milk subs (we recommend oat or cashew milk). Sweetness definitely does bring out the flavours of the spices and tea, so we recommend sweetening your chai but you can try using maple syrup or a raw local honey!

Tip #2: Need an immune boost, or just want a little extra zing? Try adding fresh ginger slices.

Dufour Plant Based Puff Pastry

We have been looking for a great plant based puff pastry for years, and we have finally found it. This vegan option is made with flour, water, sea salt, and ethically-sourced palm fruit oil. It’s easy to handle and bakes up with nice flakiness for preparations like fruit tarts, hors d’oeuvres, and fancy dishes like Mushroom Wellington. Look for it in the freezer down the Chill Aisle!

Nettle Pesto

This pesto is amazing! It's really a classic pesto with nettles instead of basil, which gives it a more demure taste but equally satisfying. Try it on your favourite pasta, as a base for pizza or spread over fresh bread. So delicious with an awesome kick of nutrition.

Ingredients:

• 3 cups fresh nettle leaves
• 4 garlic cloves
• ¾ cup pine nuts
• ¼ cup olive oil
• ½ tsp sea salt
• 1 tbsp lemon juice
• ¾ cup parmesan or asiago cheese, shredded (optional)

Instructions:

1. Put a pot of water on and when its boiling dump the fresh nettles in for just one minute.
2. Strain well and get as much water out as possible. Add nettles to blender or food processor.
3. Add garlic, pine nuts, olive oil, sea salt, lemon juice and cheese if you're using it.
4. Pulse until smooth and creamy and salt to taste. Enjoy!

Piña Colada Smoothie

This yummy smoothie recipe from Cha's Organics will have you dreaming of Mexican beaches! Full of luscious, tropical, fairtrade ingredients for a superpowered summer sipper. This recipe makes one smoothie; double or triple as needed.

Ingredients:

• ½ cup cashew or soy milk
• ½ cup light coconut milk
• ¾ cup pineapple chunks
• ½ tsp ground turmeric
• 1½ scoops vegan protein powder
• 2 medjool dates, pitted

Directions:

1. Blend all ingredients until smooth.
2. Garnish with coconut flakes and fresh fruit.

Somenos Marsh Earth Day Work Party

Earth Day is April 22nd and National Volunteer Week starts April 24th. Great timing to come out and volunteer with the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society for their Earth Day work party on Averill Creek Saturday April 23, our Earth Day in S'amunu/Somenos. Gluten Free Sourdough Workshop

Monday, May 23rd at 2pm

Learn to make artisan gluten free sourdough bread from an expert!

Workshop participants will be exploring gluten free baking using natural wild sourdough starter and minimal ingredients. This is a versatile dough recipe that can be adapted for baguettes, cinnamon buns, kaiser buns, English muffins, sandwich loaves, pizza dough, waffles, etc. All recipes are also vegan. Learn to make delicious gluten free bread without the use of xantham gum, potato starch, agar agar, rice flour or other high-starch ingredients. Explore different binders, ideal flour mixes and substitutes.



This is a hands on workshop so that participants can get a feel for the bread, take home your own gluten free sourdough starter, and bake your own goodies to take home.
