About the CFSF Outreach Committee
The Outreach Committee is a part of the Chicagoland Food Science Foundation, the giving arm of the Chicago Section IFT. Its purpose is to promote awareness of food science and careers in the Food and Beverage Industry.
We do events with students and educators in grades K-12. Studies show that students need to be exposed to STEM activities at an elementary level to likely have a STEM career. This committee directly supports the mission of the Chicagoland Food Science Foundation which is to grow and support the next generation of Food and Beverage Professionals.
Over the last 5 years, the Outreach Committee has impacted over 100,000 students with our events. These can be part of a current school event like a STEM night or Career Fair. At these events the Foundation, with the help of volunteers, do hands-on experiments with students to show them science in action.
Additionally, the Foundation has worked with schools to create a Food Science Day. During these larger events, professionals in different careers give presentations on what their career is like and how it supports the broader industry. In addition to participating in career conversations, the students also attend a small Expo where companies have tabletops and talk about their companies.
Finally, another program within the Outreach Committee is Educator Events. These are presentations to Educators in Ag, Science, Chemistry, Consumer Science, Culinary, etc. on what is Food Science, what kind of careers their students can have in the Food and Beverage Industry and show them several experiments they can do within the classroom.
