Ontario Council President's Message
President's Message Special Edition

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is a focal point in the movement of women’s rights. It is also a focal point for CFUW Ontario Council (OC) Clubs. In this special edition, please read about the events planned for March 8, 2021 and consider participating! Support your sister clubs!!!

I would ask that all Club presidents/leaders circulate this newsletter to their members. We are to celebrate being women and learn how we continue to strive for equality, peace, social justice, human rights, and taking “a seat at the table, not on the menu.”

Talking about women’s rights: Every year the United Nations holds the Commission of Status of Women (UNCSW) series of global meetings with governments and non- government organizations (NGOs). You are aware CFUW has UN consultative status and a delegation will be virtually attending the 65th commission.   I was selected as a delegate along with Teri Shaw, OC Secretary and Sandra Shaw, OC Chair of the Status of Women and Human Rights Committee. I am also pleased to announce that there are quite a number of OC women on the delegation too!   More news to come following the March 14-28 schedule of meetings and presentations.

Ladies, please mark your calendars for May 14 and 15, 2021 for the virtual OC Annual General Meeting (AGM). CFUW Orillia is the host club and have worked extremely hard to produce an exciting reception and program for the Friday evening, with the engaging theme of “Lead 2021 – Step Into Your Power.” Dr. Wendy Cukier is the keynote speaker, who will be addressing, “Women’s Leadership in the Economic Recovery.”

Details regarding registration for the Zoom program Friday evening and the OneCast Business meeting on Saturday morning will be posted shortly.

Thank you ladies and enjoy celebrating being a woman!

Sandra Thomson, President, CFUW Ontario Council President
